Tom, Very, very impressive-----both in the power it takes, and simply getting the power to the ground! BILL
That's why I mentioned a traction recipe. The weight of the car with driver & the MPH it should have been closer to a 10.5-10.6 During the course of doing the burn-out to heat up the tires, when they start getting sticky/hot they try to pull you forward even with the line-lock on. On the 2nd. time driving the car I stayed SSSSOOOOO long doing the burn-out after I got to the pits the owner specifically bent down to see if I wore out the tires. Never once, even with that (seemed like 10 minutes) long burn-out the car NEVER even thought about hooking up!!!! The wind was blowing from front-rear & by the time I was at the lights tire smoke was billowing from the hood. WE NEED A TRACTION RECIPE!!!!!!! Tom T.
Back to my 6 year old necro post My 66 GS had a rear sway bar that was i'm sure was from the factory as I was told by the guy I got it from that he bought it new off the lot and to be honest I wouldn't think he would of known what it was in the first place to order it installed, also when I swapped out the rear end, it had the proper boxed control arms, well anyways the sheet steel spacer and bolt spacers.. This thread seemed to die out and am curious about any new updates.. Is Mr. Quiggs 66 running quicker? No found old time slips for the Flint Flyer and wondering on Pop's old notes to just what he means as far as the 353 hp. dual quads and pistons etc..and to just what motor?
Glad you revived it - Never saw this before. Very interesting thread. Love all this kind of history/trivia.
You have good timing!..... I started this post 12 years ago, and a few weeks ago this '66 GS vert falls into my lap. Looks kinda like the dealer race car I originally posted about!
Wkiilgs, could it be? Wow other than the missing lettering it sure looks it wow! It looks like it has slicks on the back and to be a convertable to boot? Like DBS said, What a great thread you started Wkillgs and it was like reading a great book only to find the last pages were gone Nice score and awesome timing..Please keep us posted.. I just don't get how down the years info on these nailhead GS's are getting lost??
I always did like the 66's, but then I don't think there's a year I particularly dislike. From the Nationals this year - Beauty.
Is this the car you got? http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/66-gs-convertible-basket-case.322887/
No, not that one. I think that one is still available. The one I got isn't the drag car. Mine is a 3 speed stick car. It was built in Baltimore and came to Philly from out of state in 1978. There was a post about it here back in October, just a link to the Craigslist ad. It's missing the original drivetrain so it's value as a rare car is pretty much gone. I don't have a plan for a build yet, suppose I could do a tribute car. The C&G Buick dealership is 25 miles from here, but the track is only a couple of miles from me. Vargo Dragway is long closed but they have a reunion show every year.
Wkillgs, a little of the thread, but have you posted any pic's of your Astro Blue 66 anywhere on the forum?
Jimmy could likely answer that, but he's not here much. There were some Q-jet cars in the 1966 road tests, Road & Track, Car Craft, ect. The R&T car had a smog pump, the others showed no pump but did have the 'Closed crankcase ventilation'. But I don't think they were avail as separate options. Option code E3 was E2 (ccv) + E6 (smog pump). ...I'll guess the pump was removed.
wkillgs, I asked Jimmy what was the factory color name of the 66GS I had and it was Seafoam green. Reason was the tiny bit of metallic which made it sure grow on people. Of the top of his head he named at least 1/2 a dozen other factory colors with the same metallic. All but one of your listed cars have it.. Long story short i'm liking that Astro blue even more
