I'm going to start the a build thread on my car, 1965 Skylark. Please PM on how these things work. It's gonna be my 1st build, let alone my 1st build thread. Please have patience and understand it might take a year or two. I will be asking all my newbee question here on this thread. I'll be back in a week, but after March 15th I'll be back strong on V8buick. Take care and be good. How I Got her 1965 Skylark Hard top. No drivetrain. Chevy 350 welded moter mounts. What I have so far for her. A 430 BBB Th400. B4B intake 750 Q Jet.
Cool project! I would carefully cut those chevy mounts off and get a set of ta or used frame pads for a big block car from a member here. They are easy enough to bolt on using the factory holes once those other pieces are cut off
Thanks Bud. I'll do just that. I have a sawzall with a torch blade just for that. I believe I have the moter mounts from my 430. Bought a chassis and service manual for 15$ each on Amazon yesterday. And starter bolts plus an AcDelco oil filter last week. My 1st thing to do is to run the engine on a test stand to check it's status and compression.
Any tips on what I can do to box my frame? In as thinking welding square stock, but don't know what strenght metal? And how bout refreshing my leather seats, any tips?
For one, you don't really NEED to box your frame in, all you really should get is the rear control arm frame ties. And b) your "leather'' seats are actually vinyl if not ripped or shredded can be cleaned, if really faded then repainted with vinyl paint with the color of choice. The vinyl paint works great, doesn't flake off and is very durable.
Thanks Derek,I will look into rear control arm frame ties. And here I thought I had leather. By the way I do have a tear. So soap and water? Thanks for the vinyl paint tip
The paint can should have directions for what to use to clean before painting, so read those for best results. As far as I know, someone correct me if in I'm wrong but I don't think that the '65 Skylark could be ordered with leather? If it is actually leather it could be custom installed? Post some pics of the rips on the seat, maybe we can figure out a way to repair them? Here is the braces I'm talking about; Without them big block torque can rip your frame apart, they started installing these on the big block A-body cars from the factory IIRC starting in '67. Here is the link for the ones in the pic; https://www.ebay.com/itm/MSS-Contro...251679579585?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c10 These are the proper '64-'67 braces for your car's frame. You can get the stamped steel factory repop version from OPGI or one of those restoration companies, same as Chevelle if you don't like those?
Here is the tear, it's on drivers seat. Derek, thanks for your help big bro. Those pictures and link help me out alot. I dont want to twist the Lark up, I don't want to be scared when I hit WOT.
Not sure how to fix a diagonal rip like that other than a new seat cover? You might be able to duct tape it before painting it? Or if you can find some good vinyl tape before repainting? The wider the vinyl tape the better, maybe something like this; https://www.ebay.com/itm/5-Intensit...ash=item5d7a360a61:g:8hwAAOSwHHFZAEsq&vxp=mtr Tape that whole section straight up and down from the top seam to the bottom seam butting the tape next to itself as close and straight as you can. This would be after cleaning the seats for the vinyl paint but before applying the paint. Paint after tape is installed. Never done this before so not sure how good it will or won't work? Would be a temporary fix until you can get new seat covers? Who knows it might last a long time? Here's something that may work better; https://www.ebay.com/itm/Optional-F...m2cc084494d:m:myva67b2clVRwD94n2W8X-w&vxp=mtr You can cut one piece to cover that entire section from sewed seam to sewed seam before painting it your color of choice! Not sure if it has adhesive already on it but if not there should be a glue out there that would make it permanent? Or possibly sew a new piece of vinyl in that section over the top of the ripped section? Would be a cheap fix, let us know what you come up with.
Been busy with the move and the baby and that thing called life but I finally got my 430 home and sitting in the back of my truck. It was stored at my moms house. I need to go through it some and flush out all the fluids. I need to pick up a 67-69 manual for either a rivera, wildcat, lesabre or an electra to get all the literature, diagrams and specs for the 430. 430 430 430 430, that all on my mind now to get this thing running. If someone knows an online database, website, pdf or can post them this thread that would be very helpful. The next step is bringing the Skylark over here, but I towed a Packard right infront of it that has its wheels seized.
During the move the 430 fell on the ground while on the cherry picker. The oil pan crushed. So ill be needed an oil pan for a 430. BUT i dont really know which one to get or if they offer different kinds (front, middle, rear sump) So what do you think ill need because this engine has to fit in a 1965 A body??? Drained the oil and it looks good. Ill drop rhe pan today and upload pictures of the damage
Thanks Ethan, ment to send out the message yesterday. Just got busy. I brought back my bumper and the th400 I'll be using on it home yesterday from my moms. Check out this bumper and tell me what can be done to take the rust off the front and stop the spread and clean up the back.
Put some oil in a clear container to examine color and quality of oil. It seems a bit thin, as it moves more fluent then that of slow thick oil. It smells like oil but also like some type of rubber. Got the pan off last night, looks to be that the oil pick up was damaged by the fall. Take a look and see what you think. So in this picture the red dot is on the only external obvious damage. The green and yellow is just so i can express my self that between these two spaces that there is nothing touching. I tried to get a picture of the gap but the angle is not there for a picture. What is that piece called that i marked with the yellow dot? Another picture In this picture below that i took of the other side i put a red dot on a tube that cought my eye. The diameter of this tube is the same but at the bend where the red dot is there is a construction where it would make a resistance for fluid to go threw it. About a 40% collapse. Is that normal? It IS my 1st time opening up an engine with the goal to get it running. Thanks, Ronnie
