https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/abEAAOSwNMVaZse1/s-l500.jpg I understand that these came with disc brake cars and that the hub caps are not too hard to find. what about the wheels? Are they different from regular steelies? They seem to be from pictures I have seen.
The DG code wheels are different from standard steel wheels due to the slots that are visible and they also have a different offset. 1967 and 1968 Skylarks offered disc brakes with four piston calipers that would not fit behind the standard steel wheels or the rally wheels that were available. The DG code wheels were required when ordering disc brakes in those years. Not too many cars were ordered with disc brakes, therefore not too many of these wheels are around. I have a set that I considered putting on my car but decided to go with 15 inch rally wheels instead.
I thought the wheel itself was the same as a Chevy Rallye wheel? If so, they are reproduced and are available new.
Just an FYI, the pictured trim ring is incorrect. The factory trim ring had a brushed finish on the inside.
The chevy rally is different. The buick wheel has shorter wider slots as in lengthwise is shorter and height is a lil taller i believe. To the best of my knowlege all 67 gs340s had this wheel
Actually the Chevrolet wheels only have different shaped slots if you compare to a later year model Chevrolet rally wheel. In 1967 both Buick and Chevrolet used the exact same DG wheel with the only difference being the color. Chevrolet painted all their rally wheels argent and Buick used body color on most colors, including red. Attached is a photo of a '67 GS400 in a road test, note the red wheels. To make matters a little more confusing the 15" rally wheel used on a '67 Corvette has a DG code as well. Also, on painted steel wheels we are accustomed to seeing a date code stamped beside the valve stem hole on the outer face of the wheel but the original DG code wheels on my '67 have no date in that location.
Not to get to far off the orig question of what the wheels are but in 68 at least you could in fact get factory disc brake cars with standard 14 in steel wheels. here is an example of how one I know came from the factory this way.
The 68 wheels should have the XB code next to the valve stem and I think look a little different with the hole size.
Bottom line that if you want this look for your Buick you can get the more common chevy style wheels and add the Buick caps and trim ring of your choice (brushed finish or polished) and you can duplicate the look with very, very few people knowing its not 100% correct. The most unique part is the center cap with the tri-shield. I don't know if the Buick center cap will fit on 15" wheels My GS with an original set of the disc brake wheels with the correct brushed finish trim ring that I picked up.
Do the '68 style wheels have a "DG" code by the valve stem also or is it different? Mine are currently in storage so I cannot check.
