With the top up on my 1971 Skylark I can really hear the rear tires on the road. The car has new quarters and no sound deadening material plus the vinyl well for the convertible top seems to be a lighter material than stock - it parachutes with the top up and the windows down at highway speed - blocking the rear window. I can only assume that the lighter material is not helping muffle the noise. Any other suggestions?
Sound deadener helps with road noise. Parachuting means trunk air infiltration. How well does your deck lid seal? Otherwise, look around in trunk for gaps/openings. May need to seal seams...
The parachuting only happens with windows down and at speed. I had tried sealing some of the seams but guess I should get back in there and look around some more to see if I missed anything. How hard is it to replace the well liner?
Under car air pressure getting in trunk somewhere and when you open window(s) it has a way out.. I think you're stuck with well liner. Sandwiched between top and pinch weld tack strip. Leave boot in well when top's up...if that doesn't do it, throw something else in.
I have a piece of 1" PVC pipe in the well now to counter the parachuting. I forgot to mention before that the trunk weatherstrip is in very good shape. I'll have to get under the car after I put a bright light in the trunk and see if I can find any more seams or gaps to seal.
