I trimmed the remainder of the quarter off this afternoon and started fitting the wheelhouse. I decided to just splice in about half of it since it's quite a bit more surgery to swap the whole thing. All I needed was the first couple inches of wheel lip anyway. The trunk drop on this side is wafer thin, so I'm going to replace the majority of it once that part comes in. Hopefully the other side is a little more solid than this one.
Nice car! Wow...that's the second unicorn on here this week. You should race Duane to the finish line. Good luck with the resto.
LOL Nick has a leg up on me there with that being his full time job. I have to figure out how to squeeze this in after work and on weekends. With 10-12 hour days there, it makes it hard to spend time in the garage after work. My goal is to have this ready by mid November...so I'm going to give it hell.
Frank, Being that Adam is getting all the stainless etc. pieces to polish from my car, he is the one controlling the race. I always liked that car and am still very appreciative of the fact that Mike brought it to the GSX reunion. Duane
I've found that if I give myself a date to shoot for, I will work a little harder on the front end so I'm not scrambling at the end. The 67 Electra I am finishing up after a year work working on it is a product of taking over 2 months off due to a move. So hopefully I won't have any issues like that on this car...although the quarters were a surprise. I hope to have these on in the next couple weeks so I can move on to stripping the rest of the car.
There will be a GSX showcase at MCACN in Rosemont this year? I cannot seem to find any information about it. Sorry for hi jacking the thread a bit. I saw a red GSX at the reunion a few years ago. Very cool car. Good luck with your time line!
Back at it... I replaced about half of the outer wheel house and a small portion of the trunk drop. Today, I mounted the quarter panel and tacked it into place. I still need to weld about 90% of it, but I have a few spot welds at the bumper relief at the back so far. The rest of it is tacked in with MIG or held on with sheet metal screws for now. Tomorrow, I hope to finish welding it on. I'm sure some are wondering how the AMD quarter fits. Everything pretty much went into place except the rear window opening flange. It is too deep. I had to cut the flange off from the base where the panel meets the rear sail panel, up about half way to the top of the window channel. So now I have to re-weld that section in. Could be worse.
Looks awesome Adam !!! Do you think the aftermarket quarters have the sharp factory body lines or is that something you will have to work in before paint etc ? Thanks
The body lines are definitely there. That was a major stipulation of buying these as opposed to trying to find NOS.
RH quarter is (mostly) off. I still have to grind all the welds out around the perimeter. Getting rid of the majority of the sheet metal allows me to access those areas. So this side was wrecked...and rusty. The same thing happened to this side when I yanked on the wheel lip. It just came off in my hand. Glad I ordered both sides outer wheelhouses. I think the trunk drop on this side is good, though.
Yep, a little crunch on the front of that wheel opening. That area on the quarter was THICK with filler.
I had to replace most of the outer wheelhouse on the right side due to being bent up pretty badly from a wreck. Once that was done, I fit the quarter panel. This side had the same issue as the other side at the rear window opening. It was too deep and didn't allow the panel to sit flush with the sail panel. Other than that, it was ok. Also, the trunk drop was in good shape, so no need to replace metal there. This is a good photo of the rear body line sweep above/behind the wheel opening. These reproduction quarters have a very pronounced line....almost too much really. I can't complain about that, though.
