Whats your last resort to get a piston that will not budge out of the cylinder? Old 401 with one rusty cylinder. Anyone ever cut a piston to get it out?
I had a '64 401 with a stuck piston. I had to apply penetrating oil several times over a 2 week period. Each time I applied the oil I took a rubber mallet and tapped both ways several times, then I applied more oil at let sit until next time. Also had to apply heat from a propane torch carefully. After two weeks of a little persuasion each day and some heat, the piston finally loosened and just left some slight marks in the bore that cleaned up during boring. Good luck
Thanks Don, thats what my good sense was telling me. Just need to be more patient. Lord knows I have plenty of other things to work on. I'll give it time.
Last one we got out with a 2x4 and a bfh after soaking in some transfluid/acetone mix for a week or two. Daughter had over heated it. I had to peal the rings off in pieces. Put new rings on and put it back together after a dingle ball hone and got 150psi compression check after reassembly. Next daughter did it in so it got a different engine next time and the wife is driving it and loaning it to the second daughter against my wishes.
Is the crank out yet? I'd pull that so's not to damage it. The rod and piston has to come out the top. Go down with it and the rings will spring outa the bore causing more grief. Set the block deck face down on a pair of 2x4s and fill the piston bottom with the lube of choice. Id actually use kerosene to leak past the ring land vents. Smack it a few time with a brass bar and hammer to shock it. A little heat from a propane torch aint gonna hurt it either. Gonna keep the rod? Dont bang on that one... just sayin'... ws
You have to be careful with your swings. It is very easy to crack a sidewall beating on a stuck piston
Cut a wood slug slightly smaller than the piston out of a 2x4 and get after it with an air hammer with a flat face bit. After soaking, of course.
i buy and sell a lot of boat motors..ive save some really bad stuck stuff..I use sea foam deep creep..i have never NOT gotten one to turn...never.. i spray it..wait a day..spray again, turn upside down etc..then i start working it, and they always break loose.. its really expensive..but its really impressive
I have used the same approach with a Chrysler 413. No heat though, the last thing I wanted to do was expand the piston. It worked.
