What b&m cooler do you use. I ask because this one has came up in my local ads.. It' b&m part number70264 .
They are absolute crap. They tend to plug up . They can do a good job cooling but restrict flow. I would Fish On.
You already have a great trans (liquid to liquid) cooler in your engine radiator. I see trans coolers as a lot of trouble and risk, to add some cooling capacity without changing your engine radiator. Bruce (uses BIG radiators) Roe
Bruce, go to post #57 on page 3 of the thread I linked. JW has a picture of the cooler in a stock radiator. You’ll see they are next to useless. With a higher stall converter, I would never rely on just the radiator cooler. Look at the picture and you will see why.
I won't recommend anything for running a high stall converter. But the aux coolers still run through the engine radiator, to maintain a minimum temp if its cold outside. So the radiator unit needs to be effective, and liquid to liquid is different from air. Racing equipment in nice weather may be able to ignore some this. A transmission temp gauge is needed to really know what is going on in all situations. The gauge is require for instance running a switch pitch trans in a hard working motorhome setup. Bruce Roe
That is how I have mine routed, using both coolers. I have used an infrared temperature gun on the cooler, hoses and pan, and not seen more than 165*.
I use a standard cooler looking cooler but with larger tube so its not a restriction. I also use a motorcycle slim fan up against it. Its in front of the radiator a good 6 inches away.
Also risk of running colder if a larger than needed cooler is used ..a fluid control thermostat is a good idea, especial if in colder climates .Running to cold not good for trans same as like running engine oil to cold . https://derale.com/products/fluid-c...sher-pullerfan-with-standard-mount-kit-detail trans temp gauge best tool 1st ....then take it from there lots of other things you can do before installing aux cooler if running hotter than usual. Flush out cooling lines including cooler in radiator (back flush ) ....or maybe time to change the whole radiator Run synthetic atf Install larger trans pan or a derale with the air tube to increase oil capacity and of course if your running a beefed up trans and higher stall converter terrorizing the neighborhood you will most likely need a aux cooler
When I lived in AK. This is what I used for a transmission heater... BTW work great as a cooler also. https://www.ebay.com/itm/OMC-Marine...=item5b15896fd0:g:W20AAOSw1TFb5IHg:rk:10:pf:0
I had a B&M stacked plate cooler on mine but it seemed to be too small. I put a bigger borg & Warner stacked plate cooler in my front grill with a 7" electric fan behind it hooked up to a switch so on hot days in stop and go traffic if the trans starts to heat up I can flick it on to pull air through it to help it cool down. I also put a Derale extra deep pan with the cooling tubes and a temp gauge in the pan to help out. I don't have the lines currently running into the aluminum radiator right now but I think I will do that this spring when I drop the trans for a rebuild.
