Very sad story. The photo showing both vehicles illustrate just how much safety has improved over the years. I always have to correct people when they say how safe these old cars are because they're made from real steel. It's a silly misconception....real death traps.

 

While I don't enjoy seeing/hearing of anyone dying in a car crash, it's ironic that the offending driver is often the one who survives. Where is the justice?

 

I saw the pictures earlier today and didn’t realize that it happened in my state.
In fact that’s only about a half an hour from me.

Terrible way to go.

 

The driver in the Elcamino test driving to buy and the owner was in the passenger seat .

May that dirtbag rot in prison, and then in hell where he belongs. Sounds like he is a real piece of work. I don't think there's enough asterisks for me to type what I'd really like to say about someone like that.

 

And the menace to society lives on, ...awesome! It's a real shame he didn't hit a viaduct before he caused the havoc that he did. What a total POS that dude is.

Hopefully the Judge has some smarts and sees through that.

 

You all just posted exactly how I feel. Too many out there with no license, no insurance and no concerns for anyone but themselves. If the scumbag could have run, you know damned well he would have. I hope he gets Bubba, and family, kicking in his back door in prison.

 

Accidents like that are why I retrofitted factory shoulder straps on my ragtop -- scary thinking about a wreck like that with just lap belts.

And yes -- it is amazing how hard newer cars can get hit and still have the occupants walk away unscathed, even if they don't deserve to.

 

I refuse to call this an accident...vehicular homicide. Otherwise, I can't add anything to what's already been said about this needless tragedy.

What a terrible tragedy.

 

I just wrote almost two paragraphs describing how I felt after reading the stories and seeing the videos, which echoed everything that’s been said and how all of us feel based on the comments. It seemed repetitious, so I deleted it. The takeaway I got once I was back at a blank page is that he’s probably gonna get a life sentence, and life is something that two innocent men no longer have. That tells me that the best outcome for justice in this case is an upside-down equation.

I had met Roger and chatted with him about his El Camino a couple of times over the years at car events and local parades. I don't know why I like El Caminos - I just do. I didn't know him well, to me he was like any of us that have old cars and are involved in the hobby.

Maybe that is what is so disturbing to me about the whole thing - it could have been any of us driving that car, including me. The "alleged" suspect hurt innocent people and that makes me angry. I am more angry at the fact that we have laws that were enforced, he was arrested, his license was revoked, and yet his total disregard for human life, decency and the rule of law told him to just do whatever he wanted to do regardless of consequences and commit several crimes and take 2 lives. It forces me to wrestle with evil in the hearts of man and look at how futile it is to deal with someone like this suspect. How does a person's belief system get so skewed?

And it reminds me that life comes with risk. I love old cars but safety has come a long ways in 50 years and driving these old cars, motorcycles and such is a self imposed risk. As litigation, regulation and legislation changed cars they made them more expensive but so much safer that we expect to survive even serious accidents like these where people just died years ago.
