Park seems to be engaged properly, but every other gear acts like its in Neutral. I'm fairly sure I hooked the shift linkage to the trans correctly, but obviously not. Unless there is something that I've completely over looked. Any thoughts? Is there anything else that would make it do this? Or is it obvious that I didn't hook it up correctly?
Does it have enough fluid in it? If the fluid level is to low it will be like the trans is in neutral while its in gear. Running it with low fluid level can burn it up if you rev it to much to try to make it go. So how did the cam break in go?
Good point, I'll double check it. Break-in seemed to go fairly well. I do have an oil leak at the oil pump housing. Can't figure out why it's leaking so much. Other than that so far so good.
Added more until I ran out. Still low but Reverse has engaged. Drive still nothing. Will get more fluid tomorrow.
I have had a couple like that, it was a bad torque converter. The pressure port read all the right numbers, but apparently the turbine sheared from the trans input shaft. Bruce Roe
He had the trans out for an engine rebuild and forgot to refill it. Then he said he ran out before it was full, so I don't think there is anything wrong with the trans except being low on trans fluid.
When I swap an engine, it has no effect on the fluid level in the trans. I do use blocking caps for any lines disconnected. Of course I have seen pictures of junkyard gorilla tactics of trying to move a mated engine and trans out of or into a car at about a 45 degree angle, fluids running out all over. Bruce Roe
Yeah, I usually just leave the trans in so I don't have to take the hood off when I R&R an engine so the fluid stays where it is supposed to. A whole lot less work leaving the trans in.
we have removed the engine from my '72 GS (350) without oil leaks. I have plug that I insert into the tailstock of the tranny & also plug the coolant line inlet/outlets. Maybe I was just lucky.
