The steering column is NOT specific for a 4-Speed,but the switch at the bottom of the column is,and the firewall plate has a hole for the pedal rod to pass through, and gets a boot attached. Any 69-72 A-body floorshift steering column will work correctly. I have these if you still need one. I also have the firewall plate. I would need to check on the column switch, but they are available new.
Yes Brian. I am needing one as complete as possible. Please let me know price with shipping to 75088. Thank you.
Can you post up a couple of pics please? I am sure it’s fine just would like to know what to expect. Thanks Brian.
...FWIW, I have a TILT 4 speed column recently reconditioned by George N... If you are budget conscious, just buy Brians, mine is CONSIDERABLY more than his. In last pix, I am pointing to one of the differences in Manual vs Auto consoles... PM me if interested. Wheelz, Tampa Bay
That’s more of a Chevy VS Buick/Olds thing. The bottom collars are longer on a Chevy column, and can be an issue with the automatic speedo on a Buick, but doesn’t matter which type you have for a 4-speed,since your column isn’t running the gear selector on the speedo.
The price I gave him is for a non-tilt floorshift, and it is out of a 71 GS,to be exact. I need to get pictures of it.
Hmmm. . . Great info Brian! I did, in fact, remove this column from a 71 GS 455 4 speed 30 years ago. I had assumed it was a factory column since it was a low mileage wrecked car.... I know it will still work for his application however... I'm thinking he will buy yours. Wheelz, Tampa Bay
It could also be a plant thing,to a certain extent, and I’m sure sometimes they used what was available. The original column out of my 70 455 4-speed has the short collar with the notch.
Here is my steering column,4-speed switch, and firewall plate with boot retainer. The switches are different due the position of the reverse light terminals. Your steering column is in a different clocking position for reverse, with a 4-speed,compared to an automatic. The original boot retainers are a little thicker metal, compared to the repops. I can remove the wheel and include the cylinder & key. The lower selector lever has all of the original plating, and is not discolored or weathered. This will make a very nice column when refurbished.
Dennis, All of those lowers that I sent pictures of were tilts. That longer black one came out of a Chevelle 4-spd. The brown one is out of a 70 GS auto, and the red one was out of a 70 GS 4-speed.
Looks good to me Brian, let me know how you would like the funds sent. Please include my total with shipping to 75093. Thanks!
