Suddenly won't start

Drove the car for a while and it ran perfectly fine. Went to start it about 1 hour later and the engine spins but won't fire up. It's getting fuel to the carb, just appears to not be getting a spark. Pulled a plug with wire connected to see if I could see an arch... nothing.

Could it be the coil, distributer, etc. Any other tests I could do to help pin point it?

What ignition are you using? Points, HEI, Pertronix, or other?

Let's see if it starts again when its fully cold.

Tried it a few days later and still nothing. Engine spins won't fire.

I originally thought it was points but a friend who looked at it when i put it back in told me it was converted to electronic ignition. Honestly, I never checked myself. Now I feel stupid.

No, not stupid, more like uninformed. That's your choice though. You realize we can't help you until we know what ignition it is. Take some pictures after removing the cap.

    Will do!

Does the rotor spin? Sometimes the roll pin shears off and no more fire!

Here's what distributor looks like in the car if that helps with the diagnosis. 20181004_160002.jpg 20181004_160027.jpg

Crank engine , see if rotor turns. Check for voltage at coil and at you ignition in distributer.

Looks like a Petronix. If you have key on voltage at the coil +, you could try putting points back in.

I bet the Pertronix excremented the bed

Engine turns just won't fire up.

Whats he's getting at is that the engine can crank but the distributor can remain still if the roll pin sheared

Yep on points. Budget fix if the module is toast.

So turn key to accessories and just use a volt meter on the + post of the coil and see if it reads anything?

Ok, so you threw a word in there that confused me. "Module." What are you referring to? And what's the budget fix?

Just so you know, automotive electronics confuses the hell out of me. Especially ignition stuff. So I need clear guidance.

    Turn key to ignition run.

Attach the red lead to the + post of the coil. Attach the black lead of the voltmeter to a good ground (metal part of the engine). Turn the ignition key to the run position (oil light on). Measure the voltage.
