TorqueMonster1 Making My GS Great Again!

Thanks for looking at my post. Can someone explain completely and clearly for me And others in the future what the "Correct" codes, markings, script or stamping would be for a 1970 Gs455 with a build date of October 1969?? My Sloan documents show my Invoice Date as 10/08. I'm interested in the windshield, front & rear side glass and also rear glass. ALSO, will these codes be the same for factory clear glass as opposed to tinted glass? Is there a way to confirm that my car came with tinted or clear glass? (I'm quiet sure it came with tinted but would like to know how I can be sure). Is there a "guide" for reading the the stampings on glass? Thanks for your feedback. Mark

I bought a date coded windshield for my 1970 GS from Pinklington. They are the only company that can make date coded LOF windshield. I am very happy with it.

    Mark,
The correct glass would depend on where your car was built.
    For 70-72 Buick A-bodies
Framingham used PPG (A lot of east coast plants used PPG, which stands for Pittsburg Plate Glass.)
Flint & Fremont used LOF (Which is Libby Owens Ford.)
St. Louis probably also used LOF (I don't know much about those cars, as I never see them in my area.)

You can either look up the glass date codes on the web, or you could buy one of my "Date Code" books and use it to figure out the date codes of almost every part on your car. If you want one of my books you can do a search on this board and type in "Understanding Common Date Coding Systems for Mid 60's-early 70's GM cars" That will take you to the thread where it explains what the book is all about.

The Sloan docs will tell you the type glass you have. (tinted/non tinted).

PS. I have not forgot about your wheel opening moldings, just need to get a box together.

Funny LOF is Ford. We have Ford parts in our cars. Really.

    Dave,
Your car would have had Ford parts on it from Day One. Also the "O" in LOF stands for Owens, which I believe would be part of "Owens Corning" today. You know, the makers of Corelle plates.

The reason GM used Different Glass on the East Coast cars was due to Logistics. It was cheaper to buy glass from PPG, then to ship it across the country.

Then Canadian cars used DCL (Duplate Canada Limited) glass. My 69 Oshawa built car came with DCL glass.

There are also a couple of high dollar restored Buicks out there with other "Ford" parts. Kleiner was restoring a few Rim Blow steering wheels and needed the guts to make them work. He couldn't find the parts anymore, so I turned him on to the "Ford" part numbers, that were still available. He said the pieces fit in like a glove. He only had to trim off a hair, as the ford insert was a touch too long. The original manufacturer of these wheels supplied them to all the various companies.
Those "Buick" guys had to thank the Mustangs for being as popular as they were, so the company kept making the parts.

Cool on the other Ford Parts. GM returned the favor by supplying Quadrajet carbs for some Cobra Jet Engines. 71 I think.

A lot of (OEM) Original Equipment manufacturers supplied the same parts for many different cars.

For years I would "harvest" the bleeder caps off all the jeep vehicles I could find. They were the same blue plastic caps used on our GM disc brake front calipers. Before they were reproduced I used to get GOOD money for them, plus had everything I needed for myself and friends.

I took all the original hoses I could find off Cadillacs and other big GM cars. They used the same hoses as the A-bodies but were longer, so if you needed a hose, like the yellow striped ones for the window washers, you cut them down and had a perfect hose. Same with the washer-to-squinter hoses. Simply cut them to length and you had perfect original ribbed hoses. (How can a Judge bitch about original hoses?)

I have been digging into my hose supply for over 30 years now and am finally getting down to the nitty gritty. Soon I will post the remaining pieces I have for sale and that will be that.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys. My GS was a Flint car. My Sloan documents shows that under the "L" section my car came with option 2 which says "Soft-Ray Tinted Windshield". Option 1 says "Soft-Ray Tinted Glass". So does that mean that my GS came with a tinted windshield and that ALL other glass was clear??

Duane I do need to get the book you mentioned and no problem on the wheel well trim. Let me know when you ship it & I'll be looking for it. Thanks Again! Mark

Yeah, you would have had a tinted windshield only. Your car is most likely a non-AC car, and all your glass would be LOF.

Two things, first I don't think they repro clear glass and two, currently the only repro (side and rear) glass available shows a polarizing effect when viewed at certain angles.

I have it on one car and personally I hate it. I refused to buy the repro glass for my 69. (Just my opinion.)

Ok. Well that’s the way I’ll go back with it. The prior owner put a new windshield in it but I doubt it’s correctly coded. With the help of your book I outta be able to figure out which others windows need to be replaced (if any). And if I need to I may reach out to you for some glass polishing tips.

My car actually does have factory air. Mark

Your car would have all tinted glass. It’s part of the AC option. Pretty sure on that. I have been wrong before though.

    Mark,
Take some pics of the codes on the glass, or if you can't get them to come out clear enough, then write them down on a piece of paper and post that here.

Make sure to list which piece of glass the codes are from.
    We will figure it out.

If I remember correctly LOF tinted side glass says SOFT RAY on it.

C6D8E45A-0D2F-4C6A-A059-C19D8E6A86EB.jpeg Here are the different codes on my glass. This is for side glass Only, not windshield or rear glass. All of those pieces are the same as what I’ve drawn and posted. Where you see the X with a circle around it is where some differ.

The codes for where the circled X is as follows: Drivers door- AV4. Driver side back glass- AV. Passenger door- TV-4. Passenger side back glass- AV.

Again, the Sloan documentation for my 1970 GS shows an Invoice Date of 10/08.

My car came with factory air conditioning.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Mark

6CDD9D75-BD85-4DA1-A78F-6E2FA3248E58.jpeg This is the code that’s on my aftermarket windshield. I didn’t see the code on the rear glass , it was hidden by stuff OR I didn’t know where to look. Mark

Sometimes the code is in the center of the rear glass.

Also in your picture where O with X in the center is marked is where the date should be. Something like A or T month with V for the year. AV ….. TV ….

Picture below with JV is May of 1969..

I tried to explain what mine show in that area . I hope I made it understandable. That’s where the “circled X” is in my drawing.
