okay so I have an intermittent problem going on. I sometimes press the brake pedal and I have what seems to be a short between my brake lights and my gauge lighting or turn signal wiring. Which I'm pretty sure the issue is coming from the turn signal wiring. I unplugged the lighting switch and pressed the brake and my turn signals light up which don't run off the grey wiring which illuminate the dash gauges and ash tray. When I'm pressing the brake pedal and it's illuminating on the dash the brake lights don't illuminate. And then sometimes, boom, I have my brake lights working again. I was thinking this might have something to do with the flashers I just installed for the turn signals and hazards. None of my wiring shows I have any frayed or exposed wires behind the cluster anywhere. All my fuses are good. This is the weirdest thing! I don't know if someone has encountered this problem, but let me know what you think, thanks.
One of the dual filament light bulbs, probably in the rear, is bad/crossing over. Replace ALL the rear bulbs as an inexpensive test. Tom T.
Honestly, this is a little hard to understand. What is the "lighting switch"? What lights are going off or coming on when you press the brake pedal? When you step on the brake pedal, nothing should illuminate on the dash as a result. Are you saying the brake light is coming on?
Its probably a bad ground at one of the parking or tail lights . When you press the brake pedal down it is trying to use the Tail light circuit as the ground thus turning on the the dash Illumination lights .
The headlight switch. When I press the break pedal my instrument panel lights up, but this is intermittent, maybe I'll drive for 20 minutes and it will all perform as it should, and then I'll start pressing the brake pedal and my instrument cluster lights up instead on the brake lights.
Yeah that's what I was thinking, pull the rear bumper and start checking my wiring back there. And I do have one brake light out.
The bulb you have out has the brake filiment intermittently touching the Light filiment inside the bulb. Replace all the bulbs as suggested by Tom
But wouldn't that just add power to either brake or turn signal light? It doesn't explain why it's going to the instrument cluster.
Brake and Turnsignal light are the same filiment . Rear bulbs have 2 filiments . One for TS and Brake . And the other is for tail lights . If the brake and RS filiment breaks and touches the Rail light filiment ................... it would feed back to light switch and power up dash illumination lights . Or again if there was a bad ground on one the rear tail light bulb bases the power to the brake light filiment would seek the ground thru the Lighting filiment thus again illuminating the dash lights .
You want a quick and dirty method? the tail light harness unplugs right by the left side. Unplug the harness and see if the dash problem goes away
Gadzucks!!!!! Is it that hard/impossible to replace bulbs!!!!!!! Although what Jason said ALSO makes sense & is just as easy.
