Whats the delicate way to remove a lifter? Go to minute 7:25. In the video the guy says he wont be reusing these lifters so that why he was rough on them. I would like to know the proper way
When I tore down my 70 block the lifters just slid right out the top of the bore no issues, he may have had some crud build up in the bore binding on the lifters? If the engine has been sitting a long time with no oil and it is dried out maybe try blowing out the bore area with compressed air first then dump a bit of fresh oil down the lifter bore to lubricate the lifter and hopefully it comes out with no hassle.
A friend did that and broke off a chunk of the lifter bore. Either crud or the bottom of the lifter was slightly mushroomed. At that point, if your tearing it down, pull the cam out and push the lifters through the bottom.
I had a cam go bad, as was typical, in a '74 Camaro 305 SBC. Some of the lifters would not come out no matter what we tried. We took some very thin aluminum and rolled it around the old cam until it held a half round shape. It looked like a trough. We taped it up well so as not to damage the cam bearings and slid it in place of the cam. We pushed each stuck lifter down into the trough then used a long magnet to pull it out. each lifter did dent the aluminum trough but we removed them all successfully.
Lifter foot varnished, spray with aerosol carb cleaner to dissolve the varnish. Lifter foot mushroomed from excess wear, lifter comes out the bottom or you score the lifter bore as it's forced out the top. How do you know the difference? If the carb spray doesn't make the lifter glide out the top of the lifter bore E-A-S-Y, it has to come out the bottom.
If you’re just replacing a cam and lifters and they’re stuck, and not stuck due to the lifter foot being varnished, you can pull them up until they stick, remove the camshaft, slice open a piece of PVC that has a diameter of slightly less than the cam journals and that has a length slightly longer than the camshaft, slide it in and use it as a trough to catch the lifters when you tap them down.
Use a brass hammer or a lead one like you would use with knock off spoke rims. Nawwww. Rotate cam so lifter is highest point. Use a pick and pick it out.
That guy has weak little hands. Looks pathetic squeezing that chanel lock . Flat screwdriver and carb cleaner and your fingers is all you really need.
He has no idea of Mechanics . Why wouldn't you place a block of wood in the valley and use it as a fulcrum . He is prying against the lifter itself trying to get it out . Plus he has Micrometer eyes . He can see thousands of a inch . I wouldn't listen to a word he says .
Thats why I ask. Everyone on you tube "seems" to be doing it right, but when looking in the comment section i can see so much backlash. Not just this man but many you tube guys. Nothing beats the books that where made by Buick and even other Engine building books. I guess its my generation, we rather watch a video than read a book.
That guy in the video is AMAZING! He can feel the stock springs are fine just by touching them! A true machinist, a NATURAL
Mark . Did you ever hear the Jerky Boys do the Mechanic interview ??? " I WORKED ON RACE CARS 15 YEARS . I'VE DONE IT ALL "
LOL, I have a cassette of the early Jerky Boys, they're HILLARIOUS, "Should I bring my fuckin' tools?"
What, what? When I posted a vid from them of when they needed a roofer with the Mexicans on the roof with the hot tar mops, yous guys acted all offended and such.
The Jerky Boy calling for the Truck Drivers job is Great too. " I'm the best with a truck : I pop wheelies and get the load there in half the time " . Then there's the TV set that's not working : " HE SAYS TO TOUCH IT IN THE BACK " .
