Can anyone confirm this is a correct rear shock carriage type mounting bolt? I am pretty sure it is. I just found it in a stash of parts that came with my GSX and never noticed it. Head is shock gray and has two flat spots on it. It is California pristine like most of the metal on that car. I looked for these for a while when I restored the car and never knew I was sitting o on one. I have not found another though.
No, Im fairly sure those are aftermarket. I have a set of those in my toolbox. The factory lower mounts look more like this
I wish someone would reproduce the correct lower mount. Doesn't seem like that hard of a task. Im honestly shocked (see what I did there?) none of the big vendors has done it yet. I know Steve Caruso was making them at some point but no more.
I bet you can take those aftermarkets that Dave has and duplicate the original mount in a lathe pretty easily. You'd have to spin the mount in a lathe and machine off the head. Then machine a step down on the end for a washer, then stake the washer on like the factory did. Every GM car came with that style mount too. I bet they'd sell like hotcakes btw- those aftermarket mounts come with a spacer for in between the shock and axle
All true except many shocks now don't include the stud now. That particular type of stud came with old Monroes, maybe others. Typically you see those Dorman type studs with nuts on both ends. I like that style of stud that Dave shows, if you paint them shock color they look decent.
I fabricated my own by re-cycling original lower bolts from shocks that were beat,.......................however they were reproduced at one time. I don't remember, but I think Steve Caruso made copies that looked really really close. I may still have a set laying around. Duane
Could you post up a pic of those Caruso lower mounts if you can dig them up? Im curious to see what they look like
Here are a few pics. The nice thing with these was you could remove them and then put them on other shocks if you wanted. They were absolutely beautiful parts. Duane
Wow...I know I tossed 5-6 set of those OEM's as I thought they were incorrect.Don't know why I thought th ones in the first post were the right ones. Big mistake there I guess..
Not as much money on the table as you would think. I was re-machining the replacement shock bolt as David shows into what Duane has pictured. Then supplied the correct hardware. They stopped selling the shock bolt kits. I looked into having the entire bolt made from scratch but the cost didn't justify the few orders. I did shop these around to the big box resto parts suppliers and got zero interest. And no I don't have any remaining. sorry.
"I'd be a buyer on those if you want to sell them Duane" Sorry Jason, I need to keep them for a while. Duane Steve, I may have a few sets of the ones Dave pictured in his first post. Is this something you would be interested in doing again? I can probably get a few more "cores" from the guys around here. Duane PS. Now you know how I feel every time someone asks if I still make a part I no longer have. Sorry.
