Hey guys, im going to do a power steering flush and wanted to know what you guys run? I know a lot of people say throw some ATF in there and you're fine, but tell me what you guys put in anyway. 71 Buick Skylark
I had a mechanic friend and when he did a power steering flush, he used ATF for the flush part. His reasoning was ATF has detergents in it, which should help to clean out gunk. When he was done he would fill it with power steering fluid.
I like using color coded fluids so you can tell what's leaking. The oil is amber, the transmission fluid is red, the power steering fluid is clear and the antifreeze is green. These old cars are always leaking something.
GM "Cold Climate" Ive been using it a few years now on the original pump and gear box. No leaks, and no noise / whine even if I turn to full lock.
Do you live in a cold climate? I wonder if I use that in Florida it would be good. I would assume its jut ps fluid with an anti freezing agent in it?
Consult the owners manual for the correct specification. I think you'll find that a Dexron ATF or equivalent is correct. A "power steering fluid" not meeting the spec in the manual very likely will ruin seals.
wow.. if that hood can be fixed I will be impressed... but what do I know ..hope you can.. was good talking to you at waterboys aka John. carols house..... he had many nice Buicks show up today it was fun
There is no "anti freezing agent" in it. It is a thinner synthetic I believe. It is what is called for in the Corvettes.
Yeah good meeting you too! We'll see about the hood, I just cut the GS Section out just now! btw youre on my ps fluid thread not the hood one. Follow that thread and pray for me! haha
