It's time to change coolant / antifreeze in both cars. Last time I used Zerex Dexcool. What would you guys recommend for the nailheads? GS has a re-cored original radiator and the Special has a Griffin aluminum radiator. I've been looking at Prestone GM Dexcool concentrate which specially states it's protects aluminium. BTW, I did searches on the forums looking for recommendations but struck out... Thanks, Steve
Hi, I use regular green stuff, you should google dexcool as there were numerous issues with it when it first came out and know of many that ditched it for the green stuff. Regards,
The old car with the 'spensive aluminum radiator gets fresh coolant every year; so I go with the cheapest available.
I use a 50/50 blend of the old blue stuff for iron engines.. Havn't had any problems.. I'm from Denmark, so could be the colors aint the same..
Evans period! Pricey but worth it ! As with any motor if your rad cap is below the level of the T-stat, or any hose or part of the motor then be sure to burp the air out once the stat begins to open!
Prestone ethylene/diethylene glycol 50/50, in my nailhead with copper/brass radiator and heater core. (no cats were harmed in the use of this product)
my 65 has aluminum radiator and heater core, along with the aluminum intake and all the rest of the aluminum on a 455. I decided to run one the same type that all my other vehicles use. thats Zerex G05 Keeps everything very simple.
I run green in all my stuff, and it all has at least aluminum radiators and aluminum water pumps on cast iron blocks. Of course, I have to tear each of them down a couple times a year when they break, so the coolant is always fresh
Guys, thanks for the replies. Been busy with yard work and landscaping as well as the ever-present honey-do list that I haven't had a chance to get to the cars yet. Oil, filters, and coolant changes coming up soon. Will likely go with Prestone or Zerex. Steve
No Dex-Cool in iron engines. Turns everything to orange mud. Speaking from experience. Stick to normal green silicated coolant.
I`m running a `96 Suburban which I bought new. Its a beater work truck now. Over 350K, original engine/trans, and Dexcool from new. I had the rad shop put new tank orings in the original radiator at about 225K because the core looked that good. The core was then, and still appears now, as new. Dexcool has worked for me! I think folks run into issues with Dex when some yahoo adds the old green to it...or a leaky cooling system exposes the coolant to air continuously....or both! Tom Mooney
