twisted or straight.

so pulled the car into the shop, finally going get back to getting the brake upgrade done.

pulled the rear axles to remove the drums brake system. axles are 30 spline moser I got from jd race in Aug of 18, they have maybe 20 passes on them and of course I always check the spline.

these just slide right in when new, bought new moser spool at same time had to use a slide hammer to get them out

need to find my tiney 6" steel measuring stick to use as straight edge,

just want to to see what others think, are these splines straight, or are they starting to twist?

took the best shot I could but with so many different angles on the spline it was impossible not to get glare and that.

They twisted,...moser street axles are garbage,..the race alloy is good, they only make the race alloy in 33 spline and up if iirc

I wanna say Moser made mine good when I sent him pics of my stock axles with a 100 or so passes on them with less twist than theirs with around 20 or so passes. I had to raise hell but they sent me another pair, I'm sure they done the same thing but I sold the rearend soon after.
That was 20yrs and alot of paint fumes ago so memory is little fuzzy

I actually can believe it, but it's hard to believe that an American axle company like Moser would sell such an inferior product to an unsuspecting public! Not everyone needs 33 spline axles for a Street/Strip ride. Are they just clueless to the torque potential of a Buick!?!? Or are they happy peddling junk to everyone but their top-tier buyers?!?!
I bought a complete Moser 12 bolt, drum to drum rear for my 70 GS 455 around 2012. Probably has 100 passes on it...no Trans brake, just a foot brake. Launched hard on slicks though...
I thought I wouldn't have to worry about it for a long, long time.
Ethan and Ben you're making me nervous....

The splines look twisted.. First picture one way, and the second picture the other way..

The car I had them in was 4100lb with a best 60ft of 1.62 so it was no monster by no means.

    paint fumes, right....
my car is 3800ish and best 60ft so far is only 1.512......converter wasnt right and should had been low 1.40s from what the builder is saying. I debated over the 33 spline when doing this but the extra cost and time was over the hill,

Jim has been in contact with me very quickly and am very pleased with my service I'm receiving from him. Guess I didnt realise they made 2 different alloys??? But now see they have discprition for all axles 28,30,31,33,35 unless you get thier pro extreme axles which they come with a 10 year warranty

the only way to get 33s in is to replace the housing end with something like moser 7900. it's only 100 in parts but not sure if these need to be jigged to be weld in place. plus that cost if needed plus a another new spool and bearings..........then one starts to wonder if there will be enough meat in the spool to be ok once the diameter goes up?

Phil I think 12 bolts are 30 slime from factory or 33 as an upgrade

Oh, OK...you're talking about an 8.5 10 bolt.
    That makes me feel better.:):)
I just looked at people's axles at the track and saw about an equal number of Moser, Currie, and Strange and Moser had the best price.
I didn't opt for any upgrades, my finances fault....

You can get race alloy in 30 splines. I have them in green car.

that's nice to know now. what kind of times are you running in the green car

I wish I could answer that......:(:(:(

It's maiden voyage down the 1320 was supposed to be BG last year, but a freak exhaust issue after the burnout put the kabosh on that. Talk to Larry the Wizard, he has them as well as my rear is built identical to his. He can shed more light on 60', ets, weight, etc

FWIW, I got them from Jim (Monzaz) and he gets them directly from Moser as he lives near their facility.

That's who I got my axles from to I actually did call Moser directly to see if they do have a different alloy and what the gentleman from Moser told me is whether it's a 28 30 31 33 35 or even their Pro extreme axles it's all the same alloy. But if you buy the pro extreme axles in the 33 or 35 spline you get a 10 year warranty with them and anything under that or the non-pro extreme axles there is no warranty

its kinda clear , you have reached the limits of those axles,
    next step 30 spline. or??
"race" axles are made with stronger material. but have softer heat threat,
    to prevent axle shearing off,
all manufactures use similar materials and heat treat, so claiming one brand better then another
    is comical.

33 spline is fine for a 12bolt 35 its gets pretty thin on the spool,..yes definitely has to be jigged with a true bar for the ends,..but well worth it seeing how you then can do bolt in axles. I got a 1.5in stainless bar and puck setup I use

As to the Alloy deal, when I had my issue with them, the guy asked me which alloy I had I said the one thru Jegs for $289 , he said " that's a street replacement axle" you will need our race alloy that's when I told him his replacement axle was garbage because my stock axle held up too way more abuse. Then kinda went south from there but unless they've changed their process idk

Ehhhh,...MW is a superior axle in every way,..its obvious when you have them side by side

Imo,..sell the 12bolt they bring stupid money,..get a QP axle housing package, with an Nodular Iron S case or one of the new Yukon cases...why because you can get a 35 spline axle in it with no downsides and for something that is going to get beat on regularly it's just a better setup. I love 12bolts and have them in every car we have except one. Ran a 33 spline unit in my Orange car,.they are capable no doubt but as much as I hate to say it the 9in is just better suited to constant abuse.

At the very least upgrade to the 33spline in the 12, I would sleep well with it behind 750hp in 3800lb,..any more and I'd want to narrow it a few in which is what I did on mine mainly to fit a 3.75 or 3.5 bs wheel but the shorter it gets the stronger it becomes
