Hi all, Recently we took our hotrod back to New Zealand from Australia to compete at a Nostalgia Drag meet. Because we dont have a roll cage or parachute, I was told that 11.0sec was the quickest we could go and that I had to run a radial tyre. I have never run Drag Radial before, always run a 28" x 9" slick. So I purchased a set of MT ET Street R 275x60x15 Drag Radials. I had also changed to a set of Viking dual adjustable coil overs in the rear. Knowing that changing 2 things at once is never a good idea, I was forced too. So the track itself isnt world class like im familiar with in Sydney Dragway (Australia), but it seemed ok. I used to run 14psi in the slicks and was advised to run approx 6psi more in the radials. I also stiffened up the compression to start with. Turns out I didnt change the tyre pressure because it seemed ok. So my first run was **** off the line with bogging, so we dropped the float levels and WOW it hooked hard but not as high as it normally does. I was only running to half track (1/8mile) and getting on the brakes, which the commentator had fun with. We kept introducing more compression in the shocks, 2 clicks at a time and we ended up PBing all increments to half track. 60ft - 1.37sec (old 1.46sec) No Transbrake just footbrake to 2200rpm 1/8 - 6.150 @ 112mph (old 6.43 @ 112mph) These were achieved with a 3.25:1 diff gear too. Car weighs 3400lbs. Extremely happy with the results. My goal with our car is to get into the 5sec over 1/8mile and we arent too far off considering we picked up 3 tenths. We are converted to the Drag Radials for sure!! Wont be racing again till October and yes I will put the 4.11:1 diff gears in it.
4.11's will definitely get you there faster. also tires with different width rims will change et also. lots of testing coming for you
be aware with most type of drag radial that they really dont recover well once wheel spin happens. meaning something with slicks you might "dribble" the tires off the line and not have to lift to rehook......with radials the dribble turns to spins with having to pedal to hook up
I noticed that on the last run I did. I did a small burnout and it just didnt hook off the line, just wheelspun thru the 60ft
There's nothing better than a NEW best E.T. and MPH! Makes a fun night of racing so much better! Congrats Royden
LOL yeah I was going to run it all the way, but developed a wobble in the steering just after half track, so I backed out and still did a 10.1 @ 105mph
