    More rear end info

carrier breaks for the 68-70 will be as follows
    2.56
    2.73 - 2.93
    3.23 - 3.42
    3.64 - 4.30 and beyond to 5.00 ratio
Yes if you want to use the 3.23 gears you will need a different carrier or a thin ring gear spacer for the carrier you have. .150-.180 thick
68 -69 housing will have sealed axle bearings and the 1970 will have oiled bearing with the axle seal ON THE AXLE shaft out board the axle bearing.

    Matt,
The 3:23 gears, and the posi unit that you pictured, are for the 8.5” 10-bolt. They will NOT fit your 68-70 Buick 8.2” rear.

I was just going to say the same thing, that crush sleeve set up is for sure not an 8.2

    #s on the posi unit
410409 2 series (will not fit the 3.23 gears unless you have a aftermarket ring gear spacer and bolt kit)
    410408 3 series (will fit the 3.23 gears )
AS stated the 3.23 gears and posi unit are 8.5 parts NOT the Buick 68-70 19 bolt 8.25 :( Sorry
10 bolt 8.5 pinion gear will have a 1.625 pinion shaft diameter and 30 yoke spline
10 bolt 8.25 pinion will have a 1.875 pinion shaft diameter and a 27 yoke spline

If you are not concerned about originality,I would build a 71-72 8.5”. You have the posi and gears already. You can sell your existing, working 8.2” to someone looking for a nice cruiser gear posi.
    Where are you located?

TexasT Texas, where are you from

I have to x2 on the hunt up an 8.5 if possible. The parts for that 8.2 are unobtainium and the 8.5 from the buick/olds have the bolt in axles, along with the ability to get parts much more easily.
As far as the heads go. I'm betting a guy could splurge, get those 430 heads worked over real good, put the bigger valves in and still not reach the flow of a set of Ta heads out of the box. Then drop some coin on the jw entry level port job and have a better flowing set for about the same money.
That said I also have a set of 67 430 heads that will probably be on top of the short block intended for some Ta heads as a future addition. Time and money are all that stand in my way.
Great project you have there keep up the pix and updates. I'm sure I'm not the only one Interested.

Any 71-72 Cutlass/442 or any 71-72 Skylark/GS with its original rearend will be the 8.5”.

matt this might be something that might help you. seller would have to be willing to ship.......plus you need to see if your 8.2 has the same size carrier bearing on both sides or not.........and verify this is the same.
