I finally bought wheels and tires for my 70 GS 350 and I'm trying to get the stance right. The rear springs are sagged out. What rear springs should I put in it to give it some rake back? Or should I do coilovers or old school air shocks? Thanks!
There, that is better, I can tell you that there is nothing wrong with that stance. The springs are not sagged out IMO. That is the way they sit from the factory. I'd call someone like this, http://www.springsnthings.com/ and tell them what you want. Maybe they can suggest something. You can also install air bags in the springs and adjust the ride height to your liking.
I second the air bag recommendation. I have them in my '68 and I can set the height however I want it and change it back just as fast. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/air-60846/overview/
@LARRY70GS thanks for fixing the pic! If that's the way they sit then so be it, I guess! Lol I have just always thought it was low in the back like a German Shepard. I may investigate the airs tho. Thanks
You're welcome, my neck was hurting. If you want to check the trim height, here's the chart from the 1970 Chassis Manual,
@BYoung thanks for the compliment! It's been a labor of love for 23 years. Right now it's making me pull what little hair I have out! Lol @LARRY70GS thanks for the specs I'll check them as soon as I get it back on the ground.
Ok so at some point over the years I had put spring rubbers in the back to level the car. So I went ahead and put new springs in the back and it picked it about 1 inch. I think it looks better now, it darn sure rides better! I think it's ready to go to the wedding next Sunday! I also had to put a rear main in it last week and valve guide seals. So no more leaking and smoking!
Yes the car and its stance looks GREAT! IF you decide to tinker with the rear stance down the road for whatever reason, stay away from air shocks Reason being they kill the ride, and the lower shock mount on the axle was never designed to support weight, which is exactly what air shocks do as soon as you start airing them up, it uses the lower mount (axle) as an anchor point, and the shock pushes upward on the frame (upper mount) BAD BAD BAD
EXACTLY! Springs are for raising the car to desired height, shocks are to meant to control rebound, .NOT LIFT or SUPPORT WEIGHT. Air shocks are the 1980s bandaid for failing springs and shouldn't be considered.....Jim
Thanks guys! I have tried to upload a pic of the car with the new springs in it but it won't let me, maybe I'll figure it out. Now to spend today measuring the clearances in the oil pump and ordering shims so the light won't come on when it's hot!
What size tires do you have on that car? I run 245-60/15's on all 4 corners on my 69 vert and on the front only of my 70 X. With the backs on the 70 I have 8" wide rims and I run 295-50/15's. Your fronts to me look like maybe 235's?
Just got new 15x8's and put 255/60r15 on all 4 corners. Might go bigger on rear next time but it made a big difference from the 215/60r14's that were on it!
