Not that I ever “had it” but I think I am losing whatever memory I had. Okay, application 72 GS car going to 70 style gas tank complete with 70 rear bumper. I am confused on how many tank vents I need (taking charcoal canister and all other 72 related underhood emissions so all 1970 455 under hood). Also confused because isn’t there a horizontal side to side bar behind the rear bumper on my 72 style that could cause clearance issues with a 1970 fuel filler neck? I am sure it not that difficult but my mind is all scrambled worse than normal today (very frustrating). Thanks in advance for your help. Fritz
Fritz I don't think the angle of the 72 tank inlet is going to line up with the 70 bumper. 70 is much lower...
I'm in the market myself on getting a 70 gas tank with California emissions who has the correct style anyone know. Don't mean to Jack the thread Fritz. Let me know if it's ok to sneak the question in here.
Fritz the 72 will not line up perfect but it will work. I didn't change the tank on any of the three 72 cars I changed over to look like a 70. Joe go to Rock Auto I think they have the correct ones for your California emissions. I got my tank from them. I will say if you have or can find a good original tank use it. The repop tank doesn't have internal baffles (just a big empty tank)
Okay, I appreciate it guys, no problem Joe post away. Philip I added “70 gas tank” because I wasn’t clear about that. After what Ryan said about baffles and his 72 tanks squeaked by with 70 bumpers I guess I will drop my tank and check it’s condition first. So if I lose the under hood 72 Emissions what gas tank vent do I plug? Thanks again
I have one out here in CA as well. It does have a dent (previous owner) on the bottom from the car falling off the jack stands onto the jack itself. I ended up saving it in case it can be repaired. I can send you some pics through PM if you are interested. As for the original post, I agree the filler neck is lower on the 70. I had to tweak the replacement tank I got for the 70.
