Correct. There are aftermarket electronic control boxes that do a great job controlling the SP functions. Member Bruce Roe markets such a control box. Very slick. I used it when I had a SP behind my engine. http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/s-p-st-300-bruce-roes-electronic-controller.190075/ http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?members/bruce-roe.27974/
Buick called the TH-400 "Super Turbine" or ST-400, and it was either a standard fixed pitch or a "variable pitch". "Switch Pitch" was the "name" coined by Kenne-Bell. Olds called it "Vari-vane". I state this because you may find an "SP-400" but that alone is not going to mean it has the "Switch-pitch" components. And many Switch-pitch transmissions were rebuilt and the components replaced with non-Switch-pitch parts. So be aware before you commit to a purchase.
thank you Larry and TrunkMonkey....i will check the pump to make sure that it is a switch pitch...Thank again!!! ill let you know how it goes
this is a bit of a correction to something we thought about a 68 Lesabre having a throttle cable instead of a lever and rod assembly....i found a picture of a 68 Lesabre with stock throttle linkage...it is a rod and lever set up...just figure i would share that since talk about 68 Lesabres are scarce around these here....
Does your car have ‘400’ badges on the rear quarters? Does the PRNDL have L1 and L2 or just L? ‘68s came standard with the two speed auto ST300, the LeSabre 400 got the four barrel 350 and ST400. Some years of ST300 were variable vane but not sure about ‘68; maybe your car was a switch pitch two speed? Patrick
doesn't currently have the 400 badges on it...but the car has been repainted a couple times in the last 51 years....and the dash does have L1 and L2.... My belief is that this car HAD a switch pitch in it at one time, but it was removed and a th400 put in its place....now i have read articles of how a ST400 was not available in 68 and I have also read an article where there were st400 switch pitches made in 68....So my "Holy Grail" quest now is looking for a switch pitch that has a metal tag on it that says "ST400 68 BU"... B=buick obviously and the U=Lesabre....but i think i might be searching for a unicorn
