Anyone got a picture to compare the early production tach in 70 to the later 70 -72.

    Thanks!

I went and looked at the website and noticed this is an aftermarket comparison to an original.
Does the aftermarket look like the early tach?

I installed one of those reproduction tachometers in my 72 Skylark. It matches the old instruments pretty closely and seems to work well. The illumination of the repop tach is different (brighter) than the old gauges, but otherwise looks at home.
Of course an early 70 may not be such a good match, I don’t know. If the only difference is the flat lens vs pointed lens, then I think OPGI offers this tach with either lens as an option.

    Not so,
The difference between the early 70 and later 70 thru 72 tach's is the height/size of the numbers.

If you look closely at the picture posted above you will see the tach on the right has taller numbers. That looks like the early 70 tach.

    Duane,

Thanks for the clarification. My speedometer has the tall numbers and I was unsure if the tach got the same treatment for the early 70 cars. mine is a 11/69 car.

Did parts place have the bigger numbers?

Both of the reproduction tachometers that I have are the larger numbers, early size style. I'm sorry for my earlier, incorrect post, which I've since deleted.

Flint Feb 1970 job with the flat lenses (note the incorrect "purple" lens that I used on the reproduction tach), and Leeds Sept 1969 job with the pointed lenses. Both speedometers are original, both tachometers are reproductions. In person, the tachometers match the early speedometer with big numbers. Mike thanks for the reference my car is an 11/69 car 70 GS 455 4spd. I will buy a aftermarket tack since the numbers closely resembles the original.

Phil, I finally found my earlier receipt, dated 7/28/2010. The company name is GM Sports (408) 432-8498. I just went to their web site (www.gmsports.com) and it doesn't look like they sell the reproduction tachometers anymore, but you might want to give them a call. I paid $165 for it then, which is about what I paid more recently.

Left is an original from a GS built October 1969. Right is an original from a GS built March 1970. It was common to find original tachs with tall font (left) and flat lens (right) on cars while the transition was being made mid-model year 1970.

Note also that some reproduction tachometers have only two screws securing the face plate, while originals have three.

Jim, Thank you for the side by side comparison. My car is a 11/69 car and was missing the tach so this provides me with information to try and match the correct font.
