Hey all, In the process of restoring the trans cross member (along with some other bits). I was wondering what the two holes were that are over the one exhaust hump? I know the two in the center are for the transmission mount, but these others have me stumped. Thanks for any and all input! Scott
Emergency brake cable hook. It is a long metal rod with a "J" on each end. One hooks to a hole, and the other hooks to the E-brake cable to help position it. (two smaller hooks just like the big one are attached to holes in the floor pans about the rear seat floor area.)
ah-HA! that makes sense. It's been quite a while since the E-brake was on this car. I obviously forgot lol. Thanks!
If it's a th400 application there should be an oblong hole on the driver side , the front a cable passes thru that hole
Car came with a TH350 which I will be running behind the 464 while I either save up for a built TH400 or build another TH350 I have currently. Will a TH400 work with this cross member? Or does it need to be changed out?
The cross-member will have to be moved but it should work. I have seen some drilled so that it can be moved fore or aft as needed, but some need to be drilled. I put a nailhead and T-10 in my '64 'lark, (had a 300 v-8/ST300) and needed to do a little modifying. Then I decided to put in a Tremec TKO500 and had to move it a bout an 1 inch more and re-drilled. Best bet is to put the tranny in and with the jack supporting, place the cross-member without the transmission mount in and you can eyeball it pretty close to know if it should stack correctly. Then try it with the mount. (it can be a tight fit, and you might not be able to get the cross-member in place with the mount attached.) If you replace the transmission mount, make sure you take it to the hardware store and get the correct bolts. Most are metric (the new on I used is 10mm x 1.5).
It will work, you can just drill a hole in it when time comes for a th400 for the cable to pass thru..if you even care about a parking brake,..I never much have myself
Interesting, I haven't been under my frame lately to look. I would think that the frames would be drilled for either application no? Since I am using a TH350 behind my BBB do you think it will line up with the TH350 holes?
It depends. I had a 1964 Special, it had two sets of mounting holes on the frame pads. I put a 330 Olds in the car with the 3 speed Saginaw and it bolted right up, I only had to re-position it to the rear. (back in 1978) On my '64 Skylark convertible, it only had one set of holes, and I had to elongate them to fit the nailhead and T-10. But I had to drill to get the Tremec to fit. So, I do not think there is a hard fast rule besides the definite "maybe".
Yes trans will stay in the same position/holes as it is now when/if you go to a th400 you will just slide it back and utilize the last hole with two in the middle then the 4th from the back will be used
Awesome! Thanks guys of the responses and help. I would hate to get to the point of installing the trans/engine combo and then find out nothing lines up lol. Regards, Scott
The length of the cable hooks were different depending on transmission used. A turbo 400 hook is huge.
