While I'm here I may as well put some fresh paint on it. I was thinking about using gloss black. Is that the correct shade? My options are limited as I'll be using spray paint. Thanks, Mike

Gloss will actually be closer than semi gloss,..the Sem "trim black" would be a good compromise

I agree with the SEM paint. That was the closest I could get for my interior.

Use the same SEM "trim black" for the dash as well? Thanks Guys!

Be careful on dash paint recommendations. Upper dash paint called for flat. Lower dash called for Semi gloss. If you use gloss, semi or even satin gloss on the upper dash you will get a terrible glare and will be sorry you didn’t listen to me. Trust me on this. Only way to paint the upper is with windshield out and car in the shade. Lower dash and steering column called for semi glass. I have found on original cars however that steering columns were more of a satin black and duller than the lower dash. Probably because it was painted as a unit somewhere else.

I am 100 percent on the fact that steering columns were not gloss black. I have originals kicking around and certainly they are not gloss. Not even close.

Not gloss like you would spray with a gun but gloss from a spray can isn't really "glossy" when it dries...seems like the 70 cars had a little more sheen than the 71+ cars too,..our survivor 70 car was absolutely not what you would get from a spray can labeled "satin"

My only reason for even using the term gloss is because of the use of spray paint

This is Scott's virgin 350 car ,...one would be hard pressed to find a more pristine example.
Its casting a pretty prominent sheen even on the bottom side

This is Krylon Satin it's got a little more sheen than other stains I've used, it's more like the "trim" black 20190505_170557.jpg 20190504_191218.jpg
The chevelle dash and the buick ash tray are 50/50 urethane clear and flattening agent

This is Autobaun Hot rod black on both the upper dash and the cowl,..sprayed at the same time goes to show how actual stray technique can change a color drastically,...same with a spray bomb

Hugger the steering wheel hub is a totally different black than the rest of the column. Was it added? I have two original black hubs and they are not that shiny.

Hubs were always a little different color/sheen than the rest from my experience Scott's is burnished saddle interior

Scott is looking for a batwing so it may have in fact been changed

Now that this is all figured out. :) What about the color for the 4 speed small console? Would it be the same color as the lower dash? I really appreciate everyone's input. Mike

Mike make sure you scrub the column with Dawn dish soap. Before you sand it down. Get the grease off. Black looks bad. when the paint job sucks.

Top of dash should have a slight texture to it. Some call it a suede finish. Heater box should be the same. Both SEM and Rustoleum make a textured paint. How it lays out depends on how far away it is sprayed.

I do all my columns in Rustoleum satin black. Lays out nice and it has a nice sheen
