This May have been covered before but why not do it again? For me it was a Brand new at the time 1976 AMC Pacer, sand piper beige. No options. I did get a few miles in on a Chevy Kingswood wagon just before my mother traded it in on the Pacer. Funny thing about AMC at the time was they plastered the airwaves with ads for free air conditioning when you bought a new Pacer. So my mother comes home with a new Pacer and guess what??? No air conditioning??? My mother’s says well they gave me $50 off sticker. Holy crap. And guess what no air conditioning got you?? No tinted glass!! In a frigging fish bowl. You don’t know the meaning of hot until you have driven a non tinted Pacer in July. Just misery. I love My mother but she didn’t always make the best decisions buying cars. At least when I got older I got wind she was looking for a car which she always did alone and I managed to get her out of some bad situations buying something she shouldn’t. The one good thing I remember about that Pacer is that it handled pretty good having Rack and pinion steering. I took drivers ed in High School and actually got school credit for it. The car we got to drive was a Ford Maverick. It actually felt like a step up from a Pacer. Pretty funny.
We got to drive all kinds of cars and trucks on the farm before we were of legal age, but the one I really cut my teeth on was a new red 1990 Nissan Hardbody 2wd with the 2.4 and a 5 speed my dad had back when I was 10. Used to beat the he11 out of that thing on the farm, learned to drift the dirt roads and really run a manual trans. Just like this one
1974 Buick Electra Limited Hardtop. 455/210hp (I believe). Had a 3 hour window between getting out school and when my mom got home from work to go sailing.
Boy, you guys with the Buick’s and Road Runner were damn lucky! I got to do some errands in my mother’s friends mid 60’s Buick LeSabre Just after getting my license. I thought I was in heaven. My first taste of a real V8. Changed me forever.
First car I ever drove at 14 is my 68 firebird Learned and mostly drove 92 S10 which pops still has and 86 Hyundai Excel manual trans.
A 1994 sedan deville with 215,000 miles on it. It did great FWD burnouts and powered through 5-6 inches of snow with no problem.
Hahahaha....no but you did drive with both feet on the floor and you a$$ on the edge of the seat, basically standing up. Started driving tandem axle grain trucks at 13, and our Freightliner semi at 15. Different world in rural farmland Montana. You'd go by the cops down Main Street at 13 years old driving a fully loaded truck and they'd just give you the wave because they knew it was harvest time.
My 72 Skylark (green car) when I was 15. It actually just dawned on me that as of this year I'll have owned this car for 20 years.
It amazes me how many folks here have stayed brand loyal. I have owned every American Major make new and used as well as some foreign.
A couple of years old 1973 Green/Green Gran Torino 4-door. My mom and I both hated that car. If you got on it, it would sometimes just quit, and usually at the most inappropriate time. I had just picked up my girl and was heading to the Junior Prom when the car quit right in front of a pile of cars just leaving a light. Almost lost the whole side of the car that day. Turned out the timing gear skipped a tooth when it was new. Years later we fixed it and the car ran nice. Duane
Grew up farming so always was driving tractors and the 67 Dodge D series farm truck, I probably started driving the truck when I was 12. Dad a 63 Impala SS loaded to the gills with a 6 cyl that he drove to work and I would drive it from home over to the farm when I was 15. First car legally driven was 75 Mom's new 75 Pontiac Grand Ville Brougham and Dad's "new" work car a 65 Cutlass Coupe. The in 79 I bought my 67 Buick from my Granddad as my first car and the rest is history
<<<---70 Skylark Custom. Still driving it 31 years later! It's changed a little bit though over the years. Ken
