I'm figuring a can of bondo and some spray paint and it'll be as good as new.
The outfit that's selling this thing is one I see on eBay a lot, they flog rare but totally gassed Mercedes-Benz's that are in about the same shape as this, and they ask the same type of money for them. They're always on some sort of rack exposed to the elements with nothing discernible left to work with. The comment above about there being a few good lug nuts is actually ambitious, there's nothing left but scrap metal on most, and because of the length of exposure, it's usually iron oxides (rust) and nothing else. The pallet is required to hold the works together. I think their criteria for selling is when the pile threatens to fall through the rack.

So how do they stay in business? Is there that strong a demand for ‘clean’ vins and documents? For use on clones or stolen cars?

Can’t imagine there’d be much demand for just the title and tags for one of these cars. Its not like they built a cheap version that someone wants to clone into a more desirable model (think Skylark to GSX). I’m sure parts are valuable but I’m not seeing much that could be salvaged from this one...

I was thinking of the movie as well.

I have been to swap meets where they had a huge card catalog of vins and titles. $250 a tag. I was an old salvage yard that had been in business since the 30's. Thousands of titles.
