I just installed a set of Mitch's center caps. Wow! These things are first rate, come with directions and fit perfectly. Really makes the car pop. The locking tab is a great design and means I won't be losing anymore. I wish my camera was working and I could show how good they look.
Just put his Center caps on my 70 stage 1 the First time it had the correct center caps since I bought it in 1983 The original owner like the 71 center caps better.
So nice when Repro parts are done correctly. I see an NOS cap pop up every once in a while but no sense even trying to build up a set when these are avail.
I don't think so Frank. Solid stainless I believe are the closest. I guess they work, but that's actually not a suitable material to make lug nuts out of.
According to the engineers at McGard (OEM & Aftermarket lug nut/lock manufacturer in NY), the material is too hard and won't/doesn't retain the torque the way a steel nut does. They looked into making stainless nuts back in the '90's bailed on the idea.
They do seem to work as I'd said - I'm just going by what the premier lug nut manufacturer told me they found through their testing - I'm a McGard dealer & have been through their factory so it's not like I was just some random person calling. I'm sure I'll use the stainless ones too when the time comes.
I got one of the very first sets from Romanowski back in 1989 for my 68 GS 400. Won class at GSCA Nats. Can't say if the caps had anything to do with it, but they were nice!
