I’m in process of pulling the engine out of my 1964 Riviera. I have all of the wiring loose, the 3 bolts out of the torque converter and all but 1 of the bell housing bolts loose or out. How do I access the top right (passenger side) bolt. It seems to also retain the clip for the AT dipstick tube. I’m an old fart novice and this is my first rodeo. But I am having fun! All help is appreciated.
5/8” is right but I’m struggling trying to get to it. Not sure if I need to remove the dipstick tube and, if so, how it comes out.
That 5/8ths. bolt holds the dipstick tube in place, once the bolt is out the tube will come out by lifting UP.
I don't know anything about the nailheads, but my 350 GS has the same issue with that bolt that holds the trans dipstick tube to the bell housing, the tube is pretty much in the way trying to get it from the top. What I've done is go from underneath with a loooong extension and a universal with your 5/8 th's socket, that's if the firewall isn't too close. Either way, its aggravating, but take your time Also, the "clip" Is actually a welded bracket to the tube.
a box end on one end and open on the other end, put the curved side towards the engine side, can only turn a little at a time, might have to try a couple different ones.
I use a shallow 5/8 swivel socket on 2 long 3/8th extensions for those upper two bolts. Sometimes a bitch to get them to swivel the right way sit on the bolt head, but work great after that
Jim, Before you loosen that last bolt put the two at the bottom easy to get at bolts tight then remove the bolt. Once you get it loose it will turn out with your fingers.
Thanks to all. It was in tight but the universal and an 18” extension did the trick. Engine comes out on Sunday. (Need to wait til a buddy could give me a hand.) I’m looking forward to this refresh and being able to clean up the engine bay. It’s a real pet peeve of mine when I see a beautiful old ride but the engine bay looks like the hood hasn’t been opened in 50 years.
