Good Morning BBBPat Does this yoke have a counter-bore in the front for the o-ring in the transmission? Can you send a few pictures? Thanks for you help! Bob
The yoke is "AS" purchased for a spare. Theres a plug in the center of the yoke. Its a square head plug and probably needs a socket head type plug to clear the U joint. Not sure why it was done like that? If youre interested Ill get some pics this afternoon... BBBP
Hey Bob... Not undercut, just a master spline. Never quite figured that out. I got this as a package deal about a year ago and never even examined it. Looks like the PO welded a bung into the yoke where the plug went. Pretty iffy looking weld. This came out of a 1966 GTO that the PO installed an automatic OD unit in. He's playing heck getting the TV cable stuff to work with the tri-power. Just let me know if youre interested OK? BBBP
Hey BBBPat Thanks for the pictures, but from information i have gathered trying to locate a yoke if I have a o-ring on the output shaft the yoke must have a counter bore. The problem is total length of the yoke itself. And I am surprised there is not a clear a cut answer. How long is the insert length of the yoke you sent the picture of? Thanks Again Bob
Welded bung hole yoke most likely a bow tie (such language) truck item as they employ a bolt there Plug for autos has a vent hole that most dont notice in center...A bodies use a shorter yoke in their short shaft th400s & b bodies have long tailshafts & long yokes...if transplantin a 400 or m22 ...same output yoke..be certain yoke can travel forward about 5/8" as diff travels in arch as suspension travels...if measuring for shaft , cars weight should be on its tires as suspension travels down considderably if not.. Wont mention what th yoke does if that info not considdered...not pretty
I use a slip yoke with the deeper counter bore on my short tailshaft.......I likevthem so if the shaft break the yoke will hopefully slide back and not spin around but still be supported
The issue is there is no diffident answer yet to what is the correct yoke for my 69 GS. I know there is an o-ring on the output shaft 4" from the shaft end and that output shaft extends out of the extension housing, so there is a yoke that i'm looking at that has a 6" insertion length 2" of this is counter bored , if you assume about 1 to 1-1/2 inches of the yoke is spaced off the extension housing seal this would put the o-ring in the center of the 2" counter bore allowing 1" of travel in each direction, the problem is this yoke states it for a long extension housing, the only other counter bored yoke has an insertion length of 3-3/4 which to me is too short.
ttt No one has a yoke in your spare parts? I know that the GM part # was 781551 The length from the yoke end to the middle is the U-Joint dust cap is approx 6-3/4 and there is a counter bore in the yoke end (no splines) to allow the yoke to slide over the o-ring on the TH400 output shaft. Thank you for any help! Bob
Hey Ben99gtp Thank you for the links, both those examples the over all length is 5-3/8 which is to short. Needs to be over all length of 6-3/4 Thanks
If you need a original short tail yoke,if you still did not get one,I have one for you.If you are interested,PM me.Bruno.
