For Christmas, got a new nostalgic original looking radio to replace the non functioning radio in my '73 Buick Estate. Has anyone replaced one before? How difficult is it? Any special tools needed? Any tips would be greatly appreciated before I attempt. Thanks.
Have you made an attempt to pull the old radio out to see what you have to work with? You maybe lucky and have a plug and play radio.
No. Did nothing yet. Yes supposed to be plug and play....but getting the radio out.....whole dash top has to come off? Out here looking at it now.
In reality, removing the padded dash is probably the easiest route. It is NOT difficult and instead of standing on your head looking up, you'll be seated and reaching into wide open spaces where you can SEE what you are doing. It's a few screws, a couple of nuts and it's off. You do have a service manual, right? If not, buy one. Best investment you can make.
Excellent thanks. Yeah got new speakers too. OK I am going in. I will come back if I have any other questions.
Be real careful with that dash pad, it's over 45 years old. Any man handling and it will crack. I assume you're replacing the dash speakers. The OEM ones are very small and it's likely your new ones are just a bit bigger. You will have problems on the driver side fitting it in.
Ah OK thanks! I will try to go slow and be careful. There are no cracks in it now. I do not think it has ever been off before.
Bad move, first get the Chassis manual. Without it, you are almost begging to break something. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1973-Buick...660337?hash=item2ce3939271:g:kZYAAOSwsQJcQ22s https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=1973+buick+chassis+manual&_sacat=0 You'll most certainly need it again and again.
