If the seller’s story pans out this could be something special... https://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/cto/d/dawsonville-1975-buick-gs/7048575746.html Patrick (Here’s a link to discussion of Rich John’s car and all the details of ‘75 GSs. Even if the 455 story isn’t provable, all the other details -grill, stripes, headlamp snd taillamp bezels, rear sway bar-all look right. Good options, too). http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/1975-buick-century-gran-sport.285742/
My 70 Skylark has a 455 in it..Maybe I should say the dealer installed the 455 in that too..I am not buying this "wives tale"
Have you talked to the previous owner? I haven’t called about it but I figured true story or not, it’s a ‘75 GS, with a 455 already in it, which is what most of us would do. Patrick
In 1975 that would be a expensive.. complete motor and trans etc etc. Over the cost of the car.... I'm not buying that story.... If so Chevy would have been pulling out 454 and installing buick 455 at customers request.
It is a genuine 1975 Buick Century Gran Sport one of 1,288 built final year of Gran Sport production. However, hottest engine available was Buick 350 4bbl engine. Possible he had dealer install 455 ,neat car anyway. I got Phoenix Graphics to reproduce extensive one year only unique decal stripes for 1975 Gran Sports off templates of my original paint car a few years ago. Here are pics of my 1975 Gran Sport
Good eye Gary, yes I took out front bumper shock on this 1975 Gran Sport and yes it fits and looks like the Buick design engineers had originally envisioned. I feel GM over reacted to mandated 5 mph bumper regulations back in the 70's. Car looks right now.
I was looking into buying it a while ago (for far less money) but it was sold before we could put a deal together. It appears to be a decent enough car, but the 455 being "dealer installed" was never mentioned.
Good to know! When I posted the link I was excited about it being a rare ‘75 GS that looks to be a good project if the price is flexible, and figured a 455 would trump even a matching number 350 for most of us. What price were you talking (if you don’t mind)? Patrick
One of the best riding cars I ever sat in, drove one for 10 years, sold it when it became a chore to get the baby seats in and out.
I had a '75 Century Indy Pace car for several years and it was a great riding and driving car. It was pretty gutless but loved getting out on the freeway. It handled surprisingly well too.
I'd still like one of these, wish my buddy would have sold me his 73 GS instead of scrapping it, but, well, I don't fit in those buckets all that well anyway. Still, love the styling on these things and would buy one if it came up locally for the right price.
To qoute a friend who knows the car......" This car was sold new from Benton Pontiac Buick in my hometown of Cleveland, TN. Benton Pontiac Buick was the largest Buick dealer in the southeast in the 75-82 time frame. Based on what I experienced growing up in Cleveland I absolutely 100% believe the 455 was installed at the dealer. I don't need any paperwork to verify that because I know what went on in my town back then. And what was that? At this same time, Cleveland was at the height of its reputation as being the used car capitol of the USA. Literally hundreds of used cars were shipped into Cleveland weekly to receive refurbishment which included paint, upholstery, mechanical work, and rolling the miles back. We were a car town with literally a couple hundred used car related businesses. Many muscle cars were snatched by the dealers and stayed local. For example, my 17 year old co worker drove a 69 Shelby GT 500 Super Cobra Jet around as his daily. And one dealer managed to snag two SD455 Trans Ams. And this is how I ended up with a 71 GSX at 18 years old. And on and on. This all came crashing down after a story on 60 Minutes that exposed the scheme and sent people to jail. During the same time, the owner of the dealership sadly took his own life for other reasons and the dealership folded soon after. Back to the 75 Buick. I remember seeing this particular car and another black 75 "Gran Sport" on many occasions between 75 and about 83 when I kinda moved off to finish college and conquer the World. I wanted one of those two cars so bad back then, particularly the black one. This is the third time I've seen this particular car for sale in the past couple of years and I think someone is taunting me". It would be cool to have for sure!
