From what I've read in my chassis manual it came with 3.07 gears but the PO put in 3.08 gears from something??
If you want to hook at the track. You have 2 options. You could look for some 15 X 7 Buick big car wheels, they made them from 80-87, Or, you could just buy some wheels for your Drag Radials, like these, https://www.amazon.com/Steel-GM-Style-Rally-Pattern-Silver/dp/B076658FNK
8" wide, might be a better. If hes going to get a set of wheels and drag radials. From memory, I thought me and you were running the same MT, 29" tall tire. John's tire is right under 29" tall. Might be a good choice?
I have the P275/60R-15. That is 28" tall. If he was going to run the DR's at the track only, I would go with the shorter P275/50R-15 to give him more gear. 8" wide rim is WAY better. Just need the right back spacing, that might be harder to find. I'd want 4 3/4 or 5" BS.

(Edit) My tire is MT, DR, P275/60÷15 with the 3:73. rear. So that's 28" tall like you posted.. I thought we had the same tire. I think the 8" wheel is a must. . And if John is keeping the same gear the shorter tire makes sense. So for alot less money he can have the best of both worlds. Yes, I see. No go there. I'm guessing your mounted wheels fit correct. A nice set of spares with correct backspace would be great. With the Drag radials for the trac. I have a set of 73 Riv wheels I measured, 6" also.
I would run the 235 60s if you are limited to 6in rims....they are short and with help your gear ratio...I run them on my 96 Roadmaster.....BFG drag radials....14.30et
I have an interesting issue, it may not actually be an issue, but I want to know everyone's thoughts. The current engine used to shift 1-2 at 5450 or very close to 5500. Now, with the trans mods it shifts lower at around 5200.... Well, this is now a monologue because I just found the problem. It's not the engine pushrod preload being wrong, its the change in shift quality. I suppose I just had to type it out as opposed to thinking about it. I guess I'll leave this here
Yes a much quicker crisper shift will occur quicker, its probably starting at the same rpm just getting to the next gear quicker. Some governor or modulator adjustment can dial the finial few hundred rpms in. I never street drove my car so I cant give any advice on how to dial this in
I remember a guy saying somthing about adjusting a screw inside the modulator. I've never tried it. In automatic , Ide guess it drives great either way ?
Yes. And Personally, I never had a reason to try it. . I'm guessing, Your Car drives great either way? Are you going to try to get it to shift back at 5450 to 5500?
The modulator can effect top end shifts too...that's how I adjusted mine when I first started racing ......I left with the shifter in 2nd and adjusted the rpm of the 1-2 shift that way. Upshift occur when governor pressure overcomes modulator pressure. So you either need to increase mod pressure or decrease Gov pressure to make shift occur later. At wot there is little to no vaccum to reduce the pressure on the modulator.....so adding pressure here will effect top rpm shifts........but it will also more than likely make all shifts even part throttle occur at a different time. I never drove my car on the street so wot shifting is all I cared about.
I'm sure you read, they sell some kind of governor adjustment kit. Or suggest going to tramsmirrion shop for different govenors. Here Trans shops say they dont have parts for old transmissions. I'm GUESSING the kit is springs for the governor weights. I bet your local trans builder can tweak your governor.
