I have a set of 4 NOS tie rods I am assuming for a big car free for the shipping. I bought theses years ago from an NOS vendor as for an A body. The studs are noticeably longer than an A body. The vendor found me the correct ones and keep these. They are doing me no good on a shelf. They are about 10 1/2” Overall length. Main shaft appears to be 43/64” All have Saginaw S stamp on plate. Earlier years have an inner and outer. Listing for 71-74 shows interchangeable from inner to outer. They all have cardboard stud protectors and cool copper castle nuts. Please don’t take these if you are a re-seller. I want someone to have them they really needs them. Measure yours first. Yours for the shipping.
No on the part numbers. That’s why they are here for free. Racenu has first dibs. Please measure to confirm. I’m leaning towards they are for 71-74 as inner outer are the same. Earlier years require two different ones. Also with A bodies in 71 went to a thicker tie rod that requires a bigger sleeve. I am not sure if that holds true for big cars?
Yes that is correct. '64 - '70 A and '71 - '72 A are different animals. In the A body tie rod world. GM standardized suspension parts to crossover for all large B/C/D body cars starting in fall 1970 for the '71 model year. All five divisions. Have heard before then, a lot of suspension parts were Division specific.
Ok, only part number is on the rubber boots. One boot looks like it too didn’t age well with three are perfect. The rubber boots like like they are spell available from GM. Part number is 7816936. https://www.gmpartsgiant.com/parts/gm-seal-7816936.html
TRW suspension catalog has a progressive size chart for identification and I will check if you fill in some blanks. Measure the small and large diameter of the tapered posts, and the precise length from the center of the grease fitting to end of rod. Your 43/64 measurement suggests threads are 11/16-18, but are they LH or RH?
Wasn't able to get measurements anywhere, but from what's google-able, they sure look like '71-'76 GM B,C,D,E body. The '69-'70 set-up shows one short, one longer with a bend, on each side. Waiting on Racenu.
The best I can do length to end from grease fitimg is 8.75”. Tapered shaft at top just below threads is .41”. Widest point near bottom is .54”. Here are some interesting comparisons between the mystery rods left and the 71-72 A body right. View attachment 4
Yes, I did find Moog listing for length on Rock auto that appear to have the same length for 71-72. It’s the only measurement they give. They list inner as 8.75” and outer as 8.8” I honestly can’t measure the difference. The Buick parts book is apparently wrong and there is an inner and outer.
Moog catalog calls for 406R outers and 406L inners for 71-72. Dimensions are listed as being the same: length 8.66", tapered post .516" min/.591" max and threads .687-18, R and L respectively. In my Buick parts book the outers are 7810072 (group 6.233) and the inners are 7810073 (group 6.230) Your unknowns have smaller diameter tapered posts and those were the dimensions that didn't have a match.
