Ok two questions probably easy but wouldn't mind some words from the experienced. I just changed the filter on my 67 skylark. St300 switch-pitch, buttoned up with a new cork gasket, added 3 pints per the manual, and no oil showed on the dip stick running in neutral. Added more fluid at pint at a time checking each time. Heard air being expelled through the tube when I shut it off. I'm up to about 2-1/2 quarts now, but still not at the manuals spec of 1/4 below full on the stick running in park. Transmission slips, and engagement isn't immediate as it used to be. Should I just keep filling till I see it on the stick? I assume the slipping is due to low fill but I don't want to over fill. Part two. I started this project last weekend and didn't get back to it until today. Car sat nose high in the garage for a week dripping out fluid. I am quite sure I drained out way more than I have put back, probably close to 5 or 6 quarts. Hard to tell since quite a bit flowed out all over the floor when the pan came down... could they not have put in a drain plug? Anyway, is it possible I just drained way more than would be expected on a typical trans service? Or is there some other process I need to do to get this gliding through the gears (both of them) like it used to be before I did the preventative maintenance to keep it that way?
It's low on fluid. Get it on level ground and fill it until its at the bottom of the dipstick normal range. that should be enough to drive it and run it through all the gears including reverse. once the oil is hot, you can top it off to the full mark.
It's slipping because it is low on fluid. Yeah, it says 3 pints in the 67 Chassis manual, that is clearly a mistake, should be at least 3 quarts.

Watch the Wix 300 filter kit, years back I bought 2 from Rock Auto and the tube where the O ring goes was to long and the filter hit the pan. I purchased another brand and everything was OK.
I bought the cork gasket separately. I wasn't sure the rubber would do it, and didn't want to do it twice.

Just to follow up on this thread, the transmission took just under 6 qts to hit the full line on the dipstick. This was checked at idle on a warm engine. Works great now.
