I’ve finished the air cleaner. Had some help from here. Quick run down -disassembly determine what’s missing. Screws hoses clips etc. refurb screws and whatever you can. -blast metal air cleaner. -strip paint from fiberglass snorkel. Sanded with 180 grit. Washed is soapy water with gray scotch bright. Clear coated with matte clear. I like how this turned out. -primed metal part with self etch. Sanded with 600 grit. Primed again with black filler primer. Sanded again with 600 grit. -painted with “inline tube” gloss black (correct color per here) for pulley and air cleaner (again recommended here). The paint is actually a Seymour brand. I liked the black deep and dark color and laid down glossy however sprayer sucked and had to lean into it to get good evenness. Dried a little less glossy but not bad. Has to be a better paint/ sprayer. - I used Dr. Decal cuz he had an NOS Stage 1. I under stand someone here does the stickers better and I might agree based on pictures. So hope this helps other if they decide to tackle the air cleaner.
Looks great! I need to clean up mine. But I do have a question. My lid on my 70 GS Stage 1 is chrome. Is the lid supposed to be chrome or black? Is there a difference between early and late builds?
Awesome (in a sarcastic tone). You know my hole front end is a montage of parts. Wonder where the chrome lid came from. Least the snorkel survived. P.S. I still haven’t bolted in that rebuilt date code correct radiator yet waiting for my AC suitcase valves to come back from the rebuilder.
No, I bought NOS decals from Dr. decal for stage 1 but this car I bought the reproduced raised numbers version from CARS and has the made in USA in the border.
I stand corrected. Years ago, my friend found his first GS - a 1970 GS350. It had the original engine and, sitting on top of the engine, was the GS air cleaner with a chrome lid. It looked as if it belonged there and is identical to the factory lids on my 1970 GS cars with the exception of the chrome plating (I still have the lid). Perhaps a previous owner of the car found it on a Chevelle or something similar in a salvage yard and bought it. Also, someone could have picked one up at the GM parts counter back in the day, so it would have been an easily-accessible, direct-fit, day 2 modification. We just always guessed that it was a factory piece, but have never really dug very deeply into the 350 cars to discover the facts.
Every Pontiac GTO 68 to 70 came with a chrome Air cleaner lid that was the same stamping as the black 70 to 72 GS item. Those chrome lids were a very common junkyard and swap meet find back in the 80s. Many made their way to a GS...... Steve weim55 Colorado
