Buick Oldsmobile and Pontiac Transmissions have the same bell housing bolt pattern. It will bolt up to your Buick 350. Looks like the short shaft (6") version.
Local trans shop can rebuild one if you have a decent core in your car now. Get a 2200 small block rated torque converter with it. Shouldn’t be to expensive either. Should be under 1000’ ,really should be like 500 but upgrades like new sprag clutch and upgraded torque converter would be the pricey stuff.
If you have a core, a no thrills rebuild would be around 500 bucks without a new converter. Thats with you pulling it.
I have a working TH350 out of my 70 skylark. I just did a manual swap. Also located in CA but in San Jose if you are interested.
Modifications to carb , and overdrives with 2 series high way gears don’t really improve a lot. Gm did get the gear ratios pretty accurate for torque to rpm on highway.
prob so but if im dropping 500 to 1k on a trans im not going backwards if that makes sense. and they ran 2 series gears and a 200-4r behind a 307 olds with a carb the computer controlled one from factory. not idea but if it worked with it it would do ok with the 350 as well.
Computer controlled lockup, and a vacuum pump on the little 307 due to it could not produce the vacuum needed in some cases for power brakes, and it has a much smaller rear end, front brakes, driveshaft, tires, so less rolling resistance. And it still make less the 20 mpg highway. As the skylark was very similar mpg without an overdrive. the same 307, in 442/hurst olds had a 373 gear. Grand national v6 , 3.42, Monte Carlo ss, 373, , olds/Buick full size wagon with 8.5 rear used a 3.23/3.08 gears. Chevy trucks/suburban/Tahoe 1989 and up with 700 trans, 3.42 gears. 86-89 3.08/3.42 are Common gearing depending on carb/efi. Gm spent the money to figure gear ratios best for mpg and the engine they put in car. You will get better results with the right gearing. It’s not just dropping rpm as low as you can
I remember the early years of overdrive GM recommended leaving it in direct drive (third gear) in the city, then shift to overdrive when on the highway.
my leasbre got 25 mpg on the highway and other than the 7.5 rear diff they where almost exactly the same under them as my 66. in fact iirc the brakes and suspension parts minus that rear where all the same as a 73-77 a body. to swap to an 8.5 rear i could use a 73-77 a body rear on it and it was a direct bolt in as well as a 90s b body or a 9c1 (wagons had a wider rear). also had the exact same size tires. weighed 3800 lbs. i dont remember a vacuum pump being on it. did have a electric lock up. i was told they are the same frame as a second gen a body but ive never had two side by side to compare. a suburban also had a taller tire than a lesabre so that makes sense.
yeah that was what i was getting at if he spending alot of money on a new one he could basically do that drive it like a th350 and then throw it in od when he was on highway and cruise at 80 mph. be about 1600 rpm at 67 mph. i dont think that would be to low of rpm for that engine. then if he decides he wants deeper gears later on hes already ahead too.
