Duane, that's basically what I'm going to fab up for the Riv for a hitch. Something that bolts together and bolts to the frame rails so it can easily be removed. I'm trying to land a deal on a late 60's early 70's serro scotty highlander trailer to refurbish to tow behind my Riv to go camping and to tow down to the nationals maybe next year as I want to go and meet all you guys in person .
69 Rivi, come on down. We have a blast in the campground next to the track at the Nationals. A LOT of Buick campers. My son's and I take over the bath house along with the pavilion. Parking for a bunch of cars and no fear of rain, although it does suck! Look us up and come on by!!!
I read so much on here how much fun it is and how everyone gets together and has a blast. I want to come down and check it out, even though I got a Riv I know I'd be welcome. I'll definitely find you guys for sure! I'm going to try and smuggle down a bunch of the good and strong Canadian beer to share with everyone .
So... I was just driving down the road and saw a 71-72 chevelle towing a snowmobile trailer with 2 kayaks on it. I slowed down and took a couple of pictures before I had to turn. Then stopped at the gas station near my house and he was parked there so I asked him. He said his kid took his truck and he wanted to go camping with the wife and kayaks so last night he had a Reese universal hitch from a yard sale and it bolted up. He did say that it was tipped a little but it looked fine.
My GSX was a tow vehicle for world record holding speedboat. Rumor has it original owner got a speeding ticket coming out of the redwoods going 118 towing the boat.Heard the story when I was a kid not sure if true.
I had to have one fabricated by a local welder/trailer shop here in NW metro of Minneapolis. They cut me a class I and I will have them cut me a class III when we move out west next year. I tow horses, yard waste, furniture, etc... Car breaks no sweat and tranny handles it like a boss.
I'm actually surprised that there's not much towing info available on these big cars considering they were the "family trucksters" of the day towing the family boat, camper, uhaul across the USA/CAN, horse trailers, pulling down barns etc. Basically they were coupes descgised as trucks, but with class that hauled ass
We used to tow huge Uhaul trailers with them back in California when I was younger. And we used to take these 5000-6000lb trailers thru Hwy 17 between San Jose and Santa Cruz, as well as hauling stuff thru Pacheco Pass(Blood Alley to those that live there) on the way to Fresno and Visalia. Sometimes they would get hot so Caltrans used to have "water stops" with non-potable water that you could top off the radiator before continuing up the hill. Ah, the old days...
The full size GM cars up to '76 were available with big inch (454/455) TH 400 transmissions, and decent rear gears. The rear axles were already pretty beefy, and the cars had full frames, so the loads of pushing, pulling, up and down on the hitch and such were taken up by the frame not the sheet metal like a unibody vehicle. The only drawback to towing heavy loads with cars are the soft springs, and squishy suspension bushings, and smaller brakes than say a 1 ton pick up of the same era. Another thing that makes me cringe is a lot of families hitched up a 7000 lb load, filled the trunk with luggage, the piled 6 people into the car, yeah it could move it, but how stable was it at 60 mph
Anyone with a hitch on their 70 to 72 skylark/GS could you post some pictures of how and where they bolt up.
I think that is so cool to see someone with a classic and they’re not afraid to put it to work cause that’s all they have
I have a hitch for a 68-72 A body if anyone is looking for one. Had it sold a couple times but the shipping killed the deal.....
