Rear end out. Backlash now 0.018" (I took it for another drive), total preload with carrier and no axles 9 in-lbs. Looks like setting up from scratch
Goes with the backlash that makes the pattern swipe the best. .006-.010 What pinion shim depth did you have? Please keep sending pictures for us to help. Jim
Tried pinion shims from .028 to 045, all sorts of backlash settings, and could not get the pattern to move from extreme toe drive and extreme heel coast. Similar to original pics posted. Must have pulled and installed carrier 50 times. Needless to say I got pretty good at it...
Original setup was .039" pinion shim, the front pinion bearing was not new (rust on inner bearing race), and the carrier races had marks that kind of looked like classic brinnelling, though that is not really possible. And since it was a duragrip they had to replace the bearings so no clue how they could screw them up on the install unless they used the outer races to pound on the bearings
So... new yukon ring and pinion, pinion shim .0332", backlash .0075, good preload on all new Timkens.
Torqued455 the r&p had less than 400 miles, but the setup obviously trashed them. I installed at best pattern I could get and they sung like a high school girls chorus...so I bought all new, again, and setup myself
Looks WAY better than theirs...LOL. I always try to tell people to try and do it yourself...But most are afraid. Just do step by step and find that pattern. Keeping only on change aT A TIME Meaning do not go changing all kinds of stuff JUST do the pinion shim depth and start with .010 backlash see what you get. Read the pattern and change depth shim only reread and make sure you went in the correct direction before doing backlash also.... DO not complicate the job. How does the set up FEEL... when you spin it forward and backward? round and round? PUT more gear oil on the pattern and lets see what the pattern does. Jim
Already back in car, wife was tired of axle assembly taking her side of garage. Started with .037 obviously too deep. Went to .030, too shallow. It was nice to see the pattern change predictably.. .035 a little deep, .033 was best. Had backlash .0075 so after crush sleave, setting preload, and adding .010 carrier shims, pattern was as I posted and called it good.
Tips I learned on the corporate 8.5. Have or make pinion setup bearing for BOTH pinion bearings. Pounding the pinion out and front bearing off is no fun. Get a regular nut for the pinion to set setup preload so you dont trash the new locknut or use the original, which in my case was trashed removing the pinion. Drop carrier in place with races, drop in left shims, lift carrier half way out, install both sides shims. Start them all the way towards the top where the oil passage is next to shims. Then you can pound the shims in without them getting caught on the oil groove and chewing them up.
I know it's an old thread but I'm running into the same issue. My rebuilt 10 bolt is now has a whine from 50-60mph. I suspect the shimming wasn't done properly. Is there a specific shim kit out there for us Buick Guys? Just tell them to make sure backlash is ".006”-.008”,but no more than .010” Thanks guys
Did you or anyone take a pattern of it when it was set up? Is it whining under load or coast,or both? No special shims,you just need to select the correct ones that will give you a desirable pattern.
Thanks for the reply Brian, it was set up but Rear end specialties out here in San Jose, I figure they should have checked the pattern. I myself didn't. It was done in February right around when all the shut down happened so I dropped it off since they didn't have much work going on and could use the business. Figured they could take their time with no rush and set it up for me. It makes the noise on acceleration. As soon as it hits 50mph - 60mph even when I'm cruising but it seems to settle when I let of the throttle but I think it's because it dips under the MPH its making the noise at.
As Jim said, don't drive it until you get a good pattern, or you will trash the gears in less than 100 miles. Update on mine - no gear noise at all and they don't get babied.
If you can pull the cover and put some compound on how it is now. We can tell you which way to go with it. Also check the backlash to see what it is.
