I am looking through my pics Archie and found this pic of an unmolested 1967 GS400 engine. Two things to notice here: First is the decal font that we talked about, and the second thing is the way the GM worker absolutely nailed the valve cover decal position. Day after New Year's build? Who knows?
Why do we assume it's unmolested. It clearly has a later model Qjet on there. Maybe those are some Year One stickers ;~)
That appears to be a correct era Q-jet. The ‘67 used a side inlet also had the vent flap thingy in the front. The stickers appear to be originals because the embossing appears to be visible on the numbers. Reproduction stickers are different (completely smooth).
Yes...what Gary said and there's more, too. I kept that pic because there were some interesting details. I think I have more pics of that car. Obviously, even "Robby Redneck" stone drunk would have put that decal on straighter, so that was, the way it was. The way the silver border around the sticker has rounded corners, and is cut evenly, suggests it's original. It's one of the few pics I have of an original decal. The molded heater hose with the right clamp on the intake tells me the manifold has never been off. That is a non-existent hose, even though I have an NOS one on my own car. I hooked up Archie with one, also. The bracket on the other hose is often missing. It seems to still have a bit of the paper tag on the booster valve. I thought the plug boots were interesting, too. Sure Max, there's some stuff molested on it. If you're into detailing it's an interesting pic. I know Gary has pics like that, too. Unmolested cars are hard to find and very cool!
Got any more Frank? You're right, that hose is nowhere to be found, I had to rig up a hose on mine after the original split on me.
Echoing what Nick said. If you ever see more of these hoses or find a suitable substitute, let us know. I need 2 myself. Frank I have a poor condition original 400-4 decal and just had it on my hands about a week ago. I’ll try to find it again and post a photo here.
Thank you guys for the education. I have those crappy smooth stickers on my car, so I could see those didn't come from year one... Still very interesting. I guess there was no quality control.
