Parts Geek lists Dorman ring & pinion part# 13689-05419026 fits 1970 Buick GS with 8.25 rear without c-clips is this correct? I thought gears were no longer available for the 10 bolt 68-70 Buick only rear.
Incorrect information from Dorman. The 68-70 Buick GS rearend is unique to itself. The other 8.2” gears will NOT fit.
Looked at dorman site...THAT IS A PONTIAC gear.... 1.438 shaft everyone has those. Buick 68 69 70 is a 1.875 shaft Thiers and MANY others on the internet is WRONG as usual. Sorry.
Thanks for the info. The part number is from Parts Geek. I have a 1970 GS 350 with open 3.23, I understand that Fabcraft is the only place to get a posi unit for this rear. Is there anyone that sells an installation kit for 70 Buick GS rear ? I have found a lot of parts retailers list parts for BOP rears stating they fit the 1970 GS, it's very frustrating! What is the pinion spline count and the axle spline count? Will this help me identify the correct parts?
I am the one that told Fabcraft where to get the 1968-1970 posi untis. lol. Plus I can do 2.56 2.73 2.93 ratio also. Rebuild kits need to be custom made we have to grab pieces from other kits and move stuff around to make a 10 bolt 8.25 kit.
1970 Buick is 28 spline axles 30degree axle spline pitch We have those axles The axles in 1970 are OILED type bearing and seal The pinion spline is 27 Pinion inner bearing shaft diameter is 1.875 BIG the passenger side bearing is revgular 10 bolt BUT the driver side bearing is much larger and is full size car bearing. IT just is its own beast nothing interchanges with this rear. well axle shafts from 1970 -1972 GTO / tempest and lemans Pinion yoke is the same as 1964-1967 BUICK only (NOT PONTIAC) Jim JD Race
Axle shafts from a 1970 12-bolt O-axle will also interchange with the 1970 Buick rear. They share the same spline pitch that you mentioned above.
I greatly appreciate all the information. This car has not been driven in 30 yrs. the pinion seal started leaking after I moved the car to my garage so I thought it would be a good time to add a posi. and maybe some lower gears. I didn't know how difficult it was to get parts for this rear. I will have to ponder all this, Thanks again.
Your screen name says Stage1 Electra. Are we talking about an Electra, or an A body Skylark/GS? The Electra uses the 9 3/8 Big Car rear, not an 8.2.
1970 Buick GS 10 bolt rear. My garage got smaller, so I sold the Electra before the project was ever started. I joined the GSCA in 1982 and was a member until 2012. I've owned a 1970 GS 455, 1970 Stage 1, 1970 GSX, and many other Buicks. I sold the all of the GS's and decided I wanted to do something a little different so I built a 1970 Wildcat that went 13.7. eventually I sold the Wildcat and took the Electra as partial trade with the plan of building a Stage 1 Electra. After my garage shrank I sold the Electra and acquired the 1970 GS 350, it fits in the new garage. I thought about changing my screen name but it seemed a bit involved. Things sure have changed since 1982.
