Good evening gentlemen, Just installed from TA performance their timing cover and pump I used the orange oil pressure relief spring which gave me a cold start reading on my factory Buick Gs gauge of just above half and fully warmed up idle reading of just between the first and second bars at idle , Criuising at 2500rpm 50 mph just below half. The orange spring when you rev engine moves very slowly. When I open the four barrel the oil pressure spikes to high. So I decided to see what the black original spring would do ! It has the gauge moving much more fluidly with revs but I still have the same problem with the spiking to high oil pressure at WOT! Any idea why? Thanks for any input. Rich
It should go to high with high rpms. The engine is spinning faster. The pump is driven by how fast distributor turns.
Its not spiking, the oil pressure is rising as it should with RPM. Dont go by the factory gauge. What does your Autometer Sport Comp mechanical gauge indicate?
The factory gauge is useless. You need a number. At the track, my oil pressure is very close to 80 psi as I am going through the traps. That is what you want at high RPM. The 350 does not need as much oil pressure as the 455, but I would want 70 psi at 6000 RPM. The reading on the stock gauge depends on the sender you are using, but it should be pegged at WOT.
350 no need oil pressure ???? how do you think i keep mine together w/o blowing up. i've lowered it because of how buick(gear wear) designed it, but it still idles at 30-40 psi. top it goes up to 80. used to be higher
being a life long chevy guy was just curious. why so much oil pressure on the buick, 30-40psi at idle? cold or hot? charlie,
Charlie, read the 1st post in this thread, https://v8buick.com/index.php?threads/oil-pump-clearances-and-oil-pressure.326597/ Idle oil pressure with the oil hot is more typically closer to 20 psi, but some engine can be more or less. To get the oil as hot as it will get requires driving the car at highway speeds for 20 minutes minimum.
Before I had the 4 speed auto when going to the track I was at 3 grand on highway and had pressure at 50 when at the light it would drop down to just under 20 and right back up as soon as the rpm came up. I go against all the rules and have the large gears. I must have big holes for the oil to go thru as there is absolutely no wear on my gears after 25+ years.
I run the big nasty bad oil pump too, love going against convention. I prolly got big holes too, more lube
