I was going to wait till I got my new heads when the engine is out to do it, but Im anxious to install it. I WAS going to order the pan gasket from Rock Auto, they had the Fel-Pro closeout @ 3.59 and the Mahle gasket WITH pick up gasket AND drain plug nylon gasket for 6 bucks, but its 11 bucks shipping for either one, so Im going to Summit Racing and getting the Mahle for 13.99.
You are going to try and install it with the motor in the car?? ... ya, good luck with that... Might I suggest Chinese water torture or bamboo shoots under the finger nails, if your looking for amusement.. Roughly the same experience as putting on an aftermarket pan, for the first time, with the motor in the car. Frankly, considering how far the pan has to be moved rearward to get the pickup in past the baffles, I am not sure it's even possible with the flexplate attached.. JW
Installing it with the engine out along with my aluminum heads was my original plan, geeze I may have to go back to my original plan, it would SUCK taking the old pan off just to put it back on again so I can drive it Maybe I’ll replace the pinion seal in the GN instead
I pulled mine out one cause I thought I had A oil leak at the pickup I had to jack the motor to the firewall to get it out I got that deep pan too just different than yours. I use a square pickup like the 455 has. I have studs on the pan too and this was a royal bitch to do I also had to move engine to miss the crank a real pain in the arss
I've pulled a stk pan in and out of mine b4 to roll in bearing. Did have to.move the motor up.........this is a 455, but didn't think it was crazy bad.........had to fiddle with the tube in the pan.......wouldn't imagine a sbb to be that much crazy different are they
I've had the stock pan in/out before with the engine in place, the only bitch WAS the very bottom of the flexplate and that was with the engine raised, not a huge obstacle with the stock pan, but it very well could be with the SRE pan, as JW mentioned it could be an issue with the angle of the dangle going in having to finagle around the baffles/pick up tube. I think I'll wait
Yep Im going too! I was sitting on my patio Sunday admiring the pan, more so the welds, yeah I'd hate to scratch/ding it up How much off the bottom of the pan should the pick up be?
Stock pan vs aftermarket baffled/deep sump pan is an apples and oranges comparison.. 350 or 455.. Just so you know... the issue is clearing the baffling.. the pan has to often go rearward a touch to get it properly positioned.. no issue on the stand, but when bolted to the trans with the flexplate in the way, that's a big problem. You end up having to put the pickup on after the pan is in position, and that is just trouble waiting to happen. Also, often there is an additional fastener holding the pickup on, which would be nearly impossible to install in this situation. I only add this for reference, in case someone comes along in the future and reads this.. Marc is going to do it right.. Pickup should be about 3/16 off the bottom of the pan, or so.. JW
I know Jim mentioned 3/16", but I usually shoot for 1/4" to 5/16", especially on a larger sump like yours, AND being street driven. I'd hate to see it start sucking to the bottom of the pan if there would be any sort of "mishap" on the street, like a rock, etc.
