This one has me a little confused... The rear package tray in the X was replaced at some point and the original defroster was never put back in. So I'm trying to determine- What style grillwork it's supposed to have and where is the correct location So if you look underneath the shelf, on the drivers side where the speaker would go, you can see a faint rust mark where the original housing mated up The rust mark lines up perfectly with the housing like it was originally mounted there. But the only grill work that fits that location is this one- This is the style grill I've always seen- Mountung it on the drivers side presents a few issues. Like the speaker opening in the tray. I lined it up where it would fall in place and you csn see the speaker openings are an issue Im thinking I should just mount it in the center..
The 2nd picture with rounded housing is correct for a '70 - I sold this one below awhile back & it definitely came out of a '70. I thought the rectangular housing was '71-2. Hard to argue w/the orig. marks though. Is it possible that late '70 cars came w/the '71 style? Really early '70 cars came w/the '69 style. https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/70-rear-defroster.349259/
The original marks threw me! It really looks like it was off to the drivers side. It's going in the center
They were never in the center. That is where guys "restoring cars" like to put them, especially if they put dual rear speakers in the car, which is something else they never had. Duane
Whats really odd is the fact that the beaters defroster was in the center when I bought it. It had the original package tray in it that looked like burnt toast. If it means anything, that car was built in June. But after much online research, I determined I have the wrong grill work. The 70 looks identical to what I have, but thr studs are in a different location. So now I'm on the hunt for the right grill and plastic filler piece
Sold my complete setup to @corkgs - It's probably sitting on a shelf but obviously you only really need the grille.
I have a 70 defrost grill that has 2 screws about 2" from the square end and 0ne screw at the center of the round end. Its dk brown . Bill

Seems you have this figured out but here's a '70 (Flint) that apparently had a rear defogger. Still has the wiring anyway.
The early '70 rear window defroster used a long, thin grille on top of the package tray. I think it was centered. I think it woulds mount in the long thin centered rectangular hole in the picture of yours. As I recall the motor fan and housing mounted on the rear trunk/ seat panel. I'm quite sure you need that set-up.
Just checked - what I'm referring to is '69 +early '70 defroster kit. This kit changed in '70. If someone has a '70 parts manual it will show the part number of the kit. My '71 manual only has part numbers for the parts of the kit that were available in Nov.'71 I had this set-up in my first GS - got it from a junkyard Skylark
