Well Johnny, if it's worn on one side it means simply that something is out of alignment. That means the gear mesh can only be correct in one spot (the tight spot) and everywhere else it is sloppy to a greater or lesser degree. No different than your R&P set. Where it is loose it's gonna wear. No avoiding that except by finding the misalignment and fixing it. Start doing some measuring with your dial indicator. That'll show where the problem is. Could be any of those things I mentioned. Get the gears set up right and they'll be fine. Jim
only the last 2 rebuilds had this problem. previous builds were a lot of wear, but even. have to find the water issue and the wacky dizzy problem. it may be a while. and then again, maybe the 350 front parts are not made to fly
These pics have some wear on one side & nasty, worn thin to the breaking point on the opposite side. The cam gear was not as worn but fragments got into the mesh and chipped teeth out. All this was from cam fore & aft movement of .055 after slowly eating the block face from the original .005 cam bumper setting. Cam shoulder picked up an upset(piece of metal stuck to shoulder) which kept lapping away at the block face until failure. The pisser was chainset alignment that kept a constant pull towards the block face. Probably had abt 2k miles on these gears pictured. Another reason to maybe run that V6 bronze cam thrust bearing kit. Keep the cam fore / aft movement positively at .005
John, Install a snap ring at the rear of the block like a "Nail" has too keep the cam from moving too much to the rear. Tom T.
That would work, but I think the end of cam would have to be ground flat & square, at least abt 1/4" from o.d. Grind the complete end and your cam #'s will be gone. Also polish the end and maybe the snap ring surface that will be in contact.
Also bear in mind that the same teeth contact each other all the time which is unlike most gear sets where the tooth count is different between the matching gears so that they move relative to each other and even out any wear. So once uneven wear starts it is going to be aggravated by that. End play on the cam and distributor shaft are good places to look. Jim
The rear of the "Nail" is flat. The groove in the back of the block holds the snap ring in place. The snap ring is flat at the rear & curved at the front facing the cam
mart, your gears look like mine. OUCH! camshaft in/out slop is least 060 or more. gotta tie that sucker down. dizzy is about 030. didn't find any indication of water seepage. hope no cracks in block. off this week. gator needs work for snow. new tractor needs parts. altered needs motor mounts made. father's estate is nightmare and wife is mad. gotta buy some lotto tickets.

found another iron elsewhere. but 300 and shipping. but that should stop the t/c from dancing which i think it does. by the time i'm done, this engine will have about 30k into it. 30k..........that's one hell of a party at a strip joint....
counting all the dollars to buy buick, chevy, ford, mopar and other parts to make this toy is getting close to that number. i bought a lot of oddball stuff to see if it would work on the 350. some worked, some are garage ornamentation. lol. but what i do makes it easier for the next 350 guy to buy or not to buy parts. i'm a aircraft r&d/exp machinist by trade. we built machines, processes, etc, etc. so failure was not an option. it had to work and make money for production. so i bought the cast iron t/c from shipwreck salvage company. think out of canada. another work($$$) in progress. lol btw, did check the latest t/c dizzy hole used. dizzy wobbles. hopefully this one will solve wobbles and t/c h2o leaks. next are the gears.
she gotta be a tight fit, sounds like it is coming together. 30k yeah I get it I got a few carbs and gonna be a few cams used here TQ convertors and a extra trans yep, lots of money spent, then there is the experimental suspension package I used, nice and tight now, and now I get not much movement in that area on launch, more money, more money lol
