I knew one of my derby car buddies would come through for me. I'm getting a 200 4r out of a 1989 caprice with 104 thousand miles. BUT the housing hasn't been identified. Were they all universal bell housing? I'll be getting the transmission sometime in the spring once they start gutting the car for the 2022 Derby season. I'll eventually be using this thread for tips and install advice. I'm getting it cheap and I'm super stoked.
3000 stall and a 3:64 rear! I'll probably get the trans built first so itll be a while...probably next winter before I install it.
Got my transmission. It came out of an 89 caprice with an olds 307. Car was clean in and out. Only had 111,000 miles. Tranny fluid is pretty dark though.
I'm going to get a quote. But I might just throw in a shift kit and a stall converter and run it. My buddy said he might have a couple more for cheap. I could build one of those if this one don't work out.
You will like a 373 gear better 2200 rpm locked up TQ and driving 70mph. Get the trans rebuilt first, don't screw around putting this in, and get a good TQ convertor. A 411 gear would be so much better for the performance part, that is the way I am going to head, I want that low end launch like a 455. Anything lower than 373 is too low. I got 15 years on mine now. The Skylark with a 350 needs the 410 gear to get you out and moving I have been to the track too many times and this is what you need for the 350 to push that heavy car out of hole, the 4 speed makes this happen. I'm gett Using this kit...i believe its pretty much fail safe. http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/catalog/catalog_inc/viewitem.php?ITEMID=218
Yeah I'm definitely thinking about a 411 gear. I just called the local transmission shop in Iowa City. Fountain transmission. $1250 for a rebuild with better than stock components.
price is good, the place you are getting the other parts from is a good place for showing how to set up trans cable. The TQ convertor will cost you some so make sure you get a good one. I like my lockup convertor can lock it in 3rd gear when driving below 50 mph.
