I suspect that is because the battery is universal top/side post. The top posts may be that way out of necessity. Try buying a true top post only battery, and bring the topper with you to check for fit.
Looks like I'll need a battery for the GS soon. Getting a little sluggish after 10 years. Took a look on the Walmart and Costco sites. The pictured batteries have raised vent caps, won't work with my battery topper. Need a flat top battery. Anyone bought a flat top battery lately? Which one? I'm going to look in Walmart and Costco because sometimes the actual battery doesn't match the site picture.
We have a "farm" store call Rural King. Batteries are much cheaper there than anywhere I've looked. 24-72 is 79.99 https://www.ruralking.com/catalog/product/view/id/37702 Troy
I bought my most recent group 24 at Tractor Supply-they were a lot cheaper than the parts stores. Patrick
To the OP, I'll add a couple of things to the good info you're already received. Some time ago it was posted that the actual batteries for the 70-72 GS was an R69 whereas the current battery toppers had an R59 sticker on it. A forum member then printed up some R69 stickers to place over the R59 and sold them to members. I've forgotten just who that was. Also, if you're interested in making the Delco "magic eye" look more realistic, you can drill out the center hole in that cap and insert a translucent green marble. It will looks almost exactly like the original battery. Have fun.
So I go to Walmart first. Look up the Battery, 24MAX is the battery for the GS, 130.00. Of course they are out of stock. It's a flat top. I go next door to Costco, yup, they got a Group 24, but it has raised vent caps. OK, look at the Group 34, yup, it's a Flat top, a bit shorter, and narrower, just a bit. More Cold Cranking Amps, (800) and more Cranking Amps (1000), only 92.99. Interstate, 3 year warranty. Cheapest I have paid for a battery in many years. Sold. Thanks Jason.
I do stock the Tops and the R-69 Decals if anyone following this is in need . . . . ( I don't believe anyone else has the R-69 Decals)
Yes. Terminal spacing and orientation is the same. The battery is a little shorter in height, length and width. Once the topper is on, you can't notice any of that. You can see the differences in the picture I posted. There is a substantial power difference between the 2 batteries,
I had to switch to a dry cell only because the last two batteries I tried would splash acid out onto my fender well at launch. One was a everstart the was diegaurd I think. Never saw it happen before but after 2 in a row and my car getting eaten alive I thought I didn’t have a choice. My car runs 12:40s with 1:70 ish 60 ft
It shouldn't do that. The only time I have ever seen acid come out of a battery is when it is overcharging. If you don't have a voltmeter, you might never catch it. I had an internal regulator go bad and peg my voltmeter. I caught it as soon as it happened, but it still boiled the battery.
Well that’s good to know I will install one real soon and try again. See what is going on. I want to get one of those toppers
