I finally will be getting my hands on a TA 284-88H for my stock rebuilt 430. I ordered a a double roller timing chain from TA and was looking at buying some new lifter to use on the cam. made the 430 lifters different from the 455 ones? Will these work or do I need to get hybrid pushrods? With 5/16 ends? I’m keeping the stock 430 valve train. Also, how do you guys like the 284-88H? figured since my build is stock , just sniper efi and long tubes , 3.73 rear, it would be a nice upgrade ofer stock.
Those lifters oil the rockers through the pushrods. Your 430 oils the rockers through passageways in the block and heads.
Thanks for the info! Looks like I’m going to have to track down the hybrid pushrods and a plug kit for the heads. Looks like my simple cam swap just turned a bit more complicated
I gave them a ring and unfortunately those are back ordered as well with no ETA. I don’t think there’s an alternative source, or if there is I don’t have the correct part # looks like I might have to wait it out a bit longer.
Another possibility is to use the newer style lifters with solid hybrid adjustable pushrods. The solid pushrod tip will block the oil hole in the lifter cup no prob. This way you keep your current rocker assemblies and keep through-the-head oiling. Been there, done that. Devon
Ah, I was originally thinking about that but wasn’t sure if it would mess anything up. Sounds like that might be a good option as well.
I ran some part #’s and found that summit in TX has these lifters. Show up as solid pushrod lifters , might be worth a shot
Careful here. If these are the Buick nailhead lifters I think they are, they are flat faced. Your 430 cam requires a convex face to promote lifter rotation: Devon
Thanks for the info. I did not know that. I downloaded the catalog from Sealed power and they have these listed for the 430 buick engine. Does seem promising. I ordered them but will post close pictures and inspect them before starting any swap. Here is a screenshot of the info. i can always send them back to summit in case they are incorrect.
Well received the new lifters, finally got into my engine and pulled an old one out for comparison. everything is identical except the cup where the pushrod sits. Is the solid pushrod supposed to wear into the cup portion or did they just install the 5/16 cup into the stock style lifter? Most likely wrong lifter all together then. New lifter on left
Old one New one maybe I’m just paranoid , close but I feel like the old one has a socket that cups the lifter more
