On the way home from nationals on the hyway my original 1972 compressor must have locked up. We heard a squeal and a bit of smoke. We immediately pulled over and saw its clutch smoking. I turned off the ac and continued on the 400 mile trek home with no other issues. Compressor turns normally by hand and has pressure in the lines. It was converted to 134a almost 30 years ago. Is my clutch bearing shot? If so is there a good video or instructions on how to replace it for my moderate skill level? I have read it is not so easy. I would like to keep it appearing original and not cost an arm or leg. All ac parts are original on my nicely maintained and driven 140k mi car. Advice appreciated.
haven't seen video but would absolutely pursue fixing it. Had a complete one apart not too long ago and simply cleaned resealed and replaced the bearing. Should be god to go with just a bearing and front seal. Keep us posted.
You can pull the clutch assembly without further disassembly of the compressor. Looks like you have plenty of room to work.
I did some research. Does this procedure seem somewhat correct? https://bernardembden.com/xjs/comclutch/index.htm
I did mine, it was easy but you need a 25 dollar tool - https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/NTE...iQFMCh0kXAZJEAQYASABEgIP8vD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&
I think mine is a bad bearing, it won’t free wheel with the belt, plus it flung grease prior to failure , bought the whole assembly for $150 from OPGI, what special Tools are needed for that? Or is it the same procedure?
